i failed CA emissions... premix???
 

CAR IS A 88 GXL, N/A.


1. Turn variable resistor to full lean, or as lean as you can get and still run.
2. Trick ACV into pumping air to the cat all the time by removing the FORWARD UPPER vac hose, and capping it.
3. Run 87 octane
4. Run your tank down till your almost empty.
5. 2-3 bottles of alcohol in the tank. Drive VERY GINGERLY to the emissions station.
6. Once you pass go, DIRECTLY to a gas station and fill up with regular unleaded.


ive done #2 and #3.

question:

my HC (ppm) is way off the chart. at 15 MPH its 217 (meas) and at 25 MPH its 130.
it should be within 120-31 (at 15mph) and 96-20 (at 25mph)

i dont have a egr valve (i failed on that inspection as well).
but i run premix in the car, and i was wondering if that would affect the HC levels?

any assitance would be great.

Have you done a tune up?
Get that cat as hot as you can, drive around quite for a good amount of time in high rpms/low gears.
If you can, try not to shut it down at all before the test.

What were your other readings?

you have to run your car hard for 15 minutes, then go to the Emissions Control and run it like to 4000rpm untill just before they do the test, thats the easy way I always do with all my cars, at least here in Chile. never failed.
thats the way last week my 90Rx7vert NA have no problems with EC.

check your egr valve and your cats ive passed with premix many times.

yes, i know that cat has to be hot, really hot, the inspector had a adjustable stick like thing that held the car at 3K while he was setting everything up.

like i stated above i dont have a EGR valve and i will need to put one on.

does the EGR valve really make that big of a difference?

premix... no effect.. im surprised, still next time i go i wont run any premix.

notice hes lugging the motor at 2k or lower, i would think if the motor was running free up in the 3-4k range it would be better... yes, no?

high HC means yo u are running rich. Car have any problems? I had similar numbers on my car when it was running rich and bogging. I believe the FAQ on the top of the 2nd gen section should have a guide.

High HC can also mean you have a bad cat, you should also check your ACV, if you pinch or cap the line as it says in your post, check to see if you have a strong steady stream of air headed to the cat.

EGR is to reduce NOX, and has nothing to do with HC. If you still have an OMP then just don't premix that tank, if you don't have an OMP then premix with a very "lean" ratio, say 1/2 oz per gallon or less. It won't hurt anything in the very short term.

im going to start by buying a new O2 sensor, from denso.
as for the cat it should be fine. i know that the first of the three is gone, but when i first got the car a year ago it passed.

i dont have the egr valve on the car, but for inspection i need it to be atleast visible.( that thing is such a pain to get at)

also where should i set my timming, does this change the readings?

I passed the sniffer with premix!

what about the enigne timming?

High HC is very often caused by misfire. How is your ignition system?

Also, based on the numbers you posted I wouldn't worry about making sure your EGR is functioning. The EGR won't correct the HC problem but you will need it there for the visual.

Ignition system is stock. plugs are fairly recent, wires are old.
the timing was slightly advanced, that could have something to do with it.
