But the mechanic I've talked to said I've blown my engine out.

I was driving down the road yesterday and my radiator overflow "tank" blew it's lid and threw water and steam all over my engine bay.

My coolant system has since gone to hell, and I have no idea what happened to it. I'm looking at a $4100 rebuild, or buying an engine and putting it in myself, to save all the money on labor.

If this sounds familiar, i need help. I have no idea what's wrong with my car. :confused:

www.rotaryressurection.com is a good place to start for a less costly rebuild man. But I am sorry to hear of the coolant problems.

Sounds like it might be a coolant seal issue from what you describe. Are you familiar with the ways of the rotary? If you know your way around the garage fairly well, you could pull the engine itself and have Kevin Landers re-build it. His screenname is Rotary Resurrection on this board and his site: rotaryresurrection.com He does good work and is very reasonably priced. You'll want to spend some $ on new belts/hoses/etc when it's out. No sense in blowing out a coolant hose just after a rebuild. http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/

It could have also overheated real bad. I would do a compression test and also pull the plugs after she has been sitting overnight with a full radiator, to see if there is coolant on them. If you blew the coolant seal really bad i suppose it could cause that much pressure in the cooling system. But, do the tests before you start looking into a rebuild. At least then you will know for sure.
