I didn't think these things had governers?

I did a search and was able to find that no North American FC's had governers. And it's usually fuel cut or rev limit which would make someone think they had a governer. My dad has a stock '87 GXL with 70,000 miles, and the other day he told me it maxed out at 100 around 5k rpm. At 100 the pedal stopped increasing the speed, but could keep going to the floor. He said it had more power to give, but stayed at 100 and wouldn't go any faster. So that doesn't seem like fuel cut or rev limit to me.

He just got the car and I'm the one with RX7 knowledge, so he asked me. I know my '88 TII has no problems getting to 120, but I don't have much experience with NA's. So what's going on? I haven't had a chance to check his aux ports, and I know the car had been sitting for a few years. But it runs great, very slow compared to my TII though Any thoughts?

No govenor in USA models to my knowledge. I've 86 non turbo and a 87 that was non turbo and both have/ had no problem going over the century mark. Could be a aux port problem or timing problem...................................or a tired engine problem. Real tired engine problem.

i'm voting that an N/A depending on your elivation level, headwinds, etc... will have a hard time getting past 100mph (and vertualy no chance w/o the 5/6th ports working correctly)

there's no limmiter, i've had my TII on the back door of 150 (a stupid idea) and i pussed out.

um im going to be the one to say it is possible to get passed 100 without the aux ports. turns out when i hit just about 140mph in mine was when i had a open exhaust that dumped right below the seats and i didnt have the pick up tube hooked up so no back pressure= no aux ports....

Ive had my S4 NA going 145ish and it had more to give.. wasnt quite to redline. I backed off when a ford escort pulled out in front of me and a car was coming in the other lane..

^ I second that. my 86 N/A has no 5th/6th (pipe isn't even on the converter or there at all) and it's completely stock. the car is the lightest base model and the interior was stripped except for stock drivers seat. the dash was gone too!lol, I had clusters duct taped and my steering column vice gripped because the bolts go into the dash itself (mind you, I was working on wiring problems and such so thats why I was driving it like that to a buddies house all the time while fixing). decided I'd hit the interstate (no one on road, late at night). got to 135mph before my loose tie rod ends made the vibration to scary for me (need new ones).

Mind you it took FOREVER for it to hit 135mph though.lol. it accelerates alright up to around 110mph.

I'm sorry, i live in BFE.

i think in the total time from 0-150 i passed 3 houses, two were abandond and the other contained elderly ppl. Excessive speed in anykindof populus area is extremely stoopid.

^I agree with thejallenator there. when I did it, I was on a straight on the highway and I live in the middle of nowhere so there were no cars anywhere and woods around me. don't chance human life man. Plus, I don't go around that fast all the time, one time deal other then minor speeding sometimes (like 5-7mph over speed limit, seriously. I don't drive too fast and always do speed limits under 40mph).

Check the plugs. If the ignition breakup is bad enough you will feel it.

Back when I used to be wreckless my n/a vert hit 125 right away. My aux ports were seized and still no problems. But I do seriously lack power going over the mountains so maybe you should consider that. Higher elevation = thinner air = poor A/F Ratios. I can't even accelerate in 5th going over the mountains.

official top speed figure for the U.S. S4 N/A was 128mph. i think 145mph is really stretching it..or if we give the benifit of doubt here, an optomistic speedometer.

Thanks for all the thoughts. Elevation isn't a problem here, average Minnesota elevation is around 1200, so that shouldn't cause any problems. Since I know the car was sitting in a barn for a while, I'm sure the plugs could be replaced, new fuel filter, and maybe some basic injector cleaning. I'll take a look and if I can figure it out, I'll post back.

probably should be in 4th gear too, 5th is super duper tall in an S4 NA.

i have teeny tires on mine, 205/50/15's and it really woke the car up, the speedo is way off, but it'll get to 120-130mph no problem (indicated 120 is probably right around 100?)

ahhhh, true. I do remember reading that FC speedometers are off some up top. so everyone that thinks they did 130-140 is probably doing 100mph.lol.

I was running 205/50/15 pirelli's at the time, tires came on the car. whats the correct tire size for FC's?

No governors... Something is wrong with your car. When my vert was NA with stuck shut aux ports and a slipping like crazy transmission I was able to get it up to a GPS read 120mph going downhill...

FWIW, my speedo was dead accurate with the GPS speed.

I can tell you that the speedometers are accurate at least up through third gear unless your wheel/tire combo is throwing it off. That's from comparing dyno roller speeds and the speedometer in the car.

My 91 vert had the same problem. The aux ports where stuck so it wouldn't do over 100. Well, at least with the top down. Never tried it with the thing up.

Oh and IF you had a limiter, its only a matter of pulling the gauge cluster and undoing on screw.

Check the ports
