How to street port your own engine?

I am about to begin a rebuild on the engine out of my 87 TII, and I figure if am going to go through the trouble of tearing it apart and rebuilding it then I am going to get it street ported while i have it apart. Here is my question: I have a freind who owns a machine shop and has access to pretty much every tool imaginable, and I would much rather just take my engine there and do it myself instead of paying someone several hundred dollars to do it for me. So for a good street port, exactly what is the process of porting it? How much metal do I remove and from what places? Are there templates for cutting the openings or is it a "freehand" job? Anyone who has done this feel free to help me out here! Thanks guys!!

http://www.racingbeat.com and http://www.mazdatrix.com both sell templates, but it only shows where to cut, doesnt show the shape beyond the scribed line, thats something that is done by experience. Do it totally wrong and you have a real nice conversation piece and/or a door stop...
