How to stop minor rust on a FC
I picked up a FC with some rust near the driver side rear wheel. It's slowly eating the paint. What can I do to stop the rust? respray it or what?
Thanks |
phosphoric acid aka "ospho"

not to be a prick but if you r asking this you may want to bring it somewhere, but anyway: A- rust is deceiving, if it is coming through...what you see is only the beginning (think of an ice-burg); B- because of A. in order to get rid of it properly and the first time, as any left will start anew and spread like cancer, you must remove all bad material and sign of rust and C- with B being a process to say the least, you must be serious when taking on such a task if you want good results. If you are willing to learn and do it yourself it will prove to be a great learning experience and valuable tool- if so search or keep thread going, I'll assist u. Also, haynes manual has decent basic stuff write up if I 'm not mistaken.

If it is just surface rust, then grind it off, coat with a rust preventive paint (POR-15, ZeroRust, etc.) and then respray the area.
If it's actually eaten away at the metal (such is usually the case in that area) then the rust must be cut out and new metal welded in. |
rull of thumb rust is usually 20x worse than what you actually see. those preventative rust sprays are not usually good to use. if you try to save money by buying a less expensive spray they tend to cause fisheyes in your top coat. If you can weld or have a desire to learn i say take the project on. i would cut out all the infected area plus some. shape a new piece of metal. weld it in. smooth it out with body filler. i recomend evercoat rage. etch prime, fill prime, sand, paint. good luck. pm me if you need tips i am a painter/body guy
