How to set the timing
 

How do you set the timing on your rotary?

do you know where the CAS is? The Crank Angle sensor? and do you have a timing light? well you loossen the CAS nut and with the timing light you adjust it according to where the yellow mark is....sorry I can't explain it better. I suggest investing in the Haynes manual.

The only reason you should have to adjust the timing is if you've just put the engine back together, or if you have reason to suspect the previous person to work on it was an idiot. The timing doesn't need random adjustment, since there's really no way it can change.

That said, it's pretty similar to checking timing on any other car. There were originally red & yellow marks on the main pulley. The marks are probably no longer there, or covered in grime, or something that makes them impossible to see. However, with a bright flashlight, you should be able to make out two indentations in the main pulley, on the part closest to the engine. Mark them with whiteout, or scrape them shiny, or something like that.

You also need to jumper the "initial set" jumper. It's green, around the battery. Just short the two contacts together with a paper clip or something (I keep a large paper clip in my glove box for stuff like that). This removes any ECU timing adjustment so you can set the base timing properly.

Now, start the engine. Put your self powered timing light clamp on L1. Confirm that one of the marks (I think it's the rightmost one looking at it from the front) lines up with the pin on the block. If it doesn't, turn the CAS (the round thing sticking out of the front cover) until it does line up. Now put the timing clamp on T1, and the pin should line up with the other mark.

Remove the initial set jumper, and rev the engine with the timing light on L1. You should see the timing advance as RPMs increase.

That's about it.
