How to pass inspection with no cats?

I've recently come across a true-dual setup that I am buying, and it has no cats, just straight pipes from the header to mufflers, (duh). Where I live I need an emissions test, and I have no idea how to get around it. Unless I dont drive my car over 5000 miles per year. I was thinking of welding 2 high-flow cats in, but that would cost a bundle, plus probably hurt power alot. Is there any way to get around an emission test?? I am friends with the guy that inspects my car, but he said that they need to do a test because it goes into the computer for state records or something. Any suggestions?

Bribery is one suggestion.

There is no way around the smog test without cats. Get it inspected/smogged right before you put your true duals on. This way you can enjoy it for a year.

Which true dual are you getting?

Ya pay a shop to pass you or if the gov't does the actual testing then accidently drop a $50 bill or something :bigthumb:

Just keep the stock set up somehwere and swap it out everytime you need inspectin.

Its a custom setup with RB dual outlet headers with 2.5" piping into "insert mufflers name here". Hehe I forget what kind of mufflers. So you think if I bribe them theyll pass me?

Well I would if not for 3 reasons.

1) Thats a major pain in the ass

2) I kinda wanted to sell my current setup to get some money back from what I am spending on this exhaust

3) Thats a major pain in the ass

I think i would agree with Dre_2000, but like you said, its a PITA. But, i think thats the only way you will pass man, unless you are REALLY good freinds with the guy. But, you dont want to be risking his job just because its a pain to swap the exhaust out, you know?

OH YEAH! those pics... brb.. :D

Rxmfn7 08-15-02 09:42 AM

I understand, but I dont know if hed actually get in any trouble, its at the local gas station in my town of like 100 people :p: If it was just a manifold-back exhaust Id probably just swap it, but I am not gonna be taking off the header and putting the manifold back on and then doing it all over again, thats just rediculous.

Rxmfn7 08-15-02 09:45 AM

By the way this setup is on a 89 GXL, I wont have any problems just putting it on my '86 will I, its all the same right??

Also, *if* I would decide to put high-flow cats on each side, how much would that adversely affect HP?

banzaitoyota 08-15-02 09:59 AM

Tak a set of stock cats, cut them apart and weld the shells around your pipes

Rotorific 08-15-02 10:28 AM

No learn to take that crap off your self when you yourself then you can swap it out it only takes me like 20 minutes to put my car on jacks and drop my exhaust and i would say that is worth a smog inspection...SO i would go with the racing beat headers two presilencers like cherry bomb style and two mufflers of your choice PLEASE NOTE you will get a buzzing sound like a got damn honda from the header if you do not use presilencers....

Rxmfn7 08-15-02 12:04 PM

Well i do all my own work myself, Im to poor to take it somewhere :p: But can you seriosly get the manifold or header off that fast?? Looks like its shoe-horned in there pretty good.

And Banzaitoyota: Its not a matter of visual inspection, they dont even do that, its when they stick a tube up my exhaust to record the C02 readout and other stuff.

Do the right thing and buy yourself a hi-flow cat. Or, move to where you're exempt from testing. If that's too expensive, sell your car and ride a bicycle. The government doesn't care about your emissions.

KNONFS 08-15-02 12:34 PM

All it takes is some imagination, fabricate a "test cat" and swap it in place of the silencers when that time comes by.

It is not easy but it is not impossible, You'll probably need:

1 Small cat
2 Y pipes (one on each end of the cat)
2 RB dual flanges (maybe three)
Some tubbing
Welding
etc

Swapping the exhaust system is not incredibly hard to do. Sure it is a pain in the ass but if thats the only way to do it. Where I live you dont have to have a sniff test which is real nice for my headers and gutted cat setup i have now.

Why are you mad at me? I already have a high-flow cat on my current exhaust setup. I am getting this dual setup for pretty cheap, and just wanted to know if there was anyway to not have to go through a sniff test, thats all. If I have to I will get another cat and weld them in place, Id just rather not.

Dude i had the same problem the real only solution is to swap the pipes when it comes time for inspection. I mean think about it yeah its a hella of a pain in the ass but its once a year and the power diffrence is well worth it. On a side note this is one reason why i ended up going single, its easier for me to swap;)

WTF is that supposed to mean?

kleach18 08-16-02 05:09 PM

What you do is have your friend that does inspections enter your info for you car in and checks everything else and when it comes time to check the emissions. That is when you pull the next guy\gal in for a inspection and just do emissions on that car before you enter the info for it. That way you pass and he doesn't really get into trouble.

well you might consider having a setup that you can easily swap in a cat where the midpipe is so you can just swap it back on after the test

Crazy4Rotary 08-17-02 02:37 AM

Bribe Him

1 in 1,000,000,000 he'll get caught

my moms acura didn't pass, he got irritated and passed her, but it is her #1 mechanic so she passed for free.

Really simple, When i get my turbo i'll slip a 50 in the exhaust :) just joking just sweet talk him. :)

I'm with kleach. Thats how people I know that live in smog test cities get it done. No one will even notice. Those people who get their cars tested twice cause someone is needing to pass don't know, the gov don't know so the only ones who know are you and the mech. Talk to him about that and he'll prolly do it.
