How to pass emissions?

Okay so I will be taking my car in to get the emissions done soon, whihc i know will more than likely not pass but what are there soe things I can do to get it to pass?

CRXtoRX7 07-29-03 03:28 AM

:confused:more info.....

and why not just take it and get it tested, that will tell you what you need to fix in some cases.

J-Rat 07-29-03 03:32 AM

I am a big fan of using low octane fuels mixed with isopropyl alcohol. Kind of dangerous if not done right, but if done correctly, your car WILL pass.

Second on the alchohol thing. Friends of mine actually used to put small amounts of E85 in their tanks from the fleet stations and then go to get their emissions done. E85 is an ethanol alternative fuel with very low emissions. Passed every time. But again, it is a pretty dangerous thing if you do not know what you are doing. E85 can be corrosive to some fuel system parts.

Thank God Florida doesn't do emissions anymore.

ImprezedRS 07-29-03 01:55 PM

Well how much do i need to put in or what?

1987RX7guy 07-29-03 01:58 PM

move to texas. Most areas don't hav etesting. :D

Be carefull with that alcohole you could make it go zoom zoom to boom boom :(

Aaron Cake 07-29-03 02:05 PM

Here's a novel idea: instead of trying to cheat, make sure your car is running properly. Do a full tuneup, change all fluids, plugs, wires, filters, TPS adjust, etc. etc. Get your car nice and hot, then have it tested. If it runs right and has all the emissions stuff still attached, it should pass fine.

HOW TO - Correctly pass emissions

By: Markus

1. Move to a state that doesnt have emission laws OR
2. Don't drive a high output/race tuned rotary.

"Good luck"

First of all, what I am about to tell you is an experience of my past. It has no technical bearing what so ever, and if you toast your engine like an English Muffin, it is your own fault. This is what I did, and it worked, that is all that I have to say about that before I tell you what I did.

E85 is 85% ethanol, and 15% gasoline. The gasoline aids in cold starting mainly. Diesel engines use E95 which is 95% ethanol since their ultra high compression affords them much better starting characteristics.

In general, the consesus is that no matter what the fuel system components are, 15% ethanol will not cause damage to the system. This a theory that I have never tested outside of dumping the stuff in my tank. For one gallong of E85, you are getting .85 gallons of ethanol, or about 108 ounces. If you figure the RX-7 has about a 16 gallon gas tank, if I am not mistaken, 2 gallons of E85 would do it. This is at least how I used to do it.

When I went for testing, I would run all accessories, including, and especially a/c, to bring the engine to its hottest safe operating temp. A cold engine makes more emissions.

I may be dead friggin' wrong on this, but it worked, and I never had to worry. You might want to give the engine a few days to adjust to the E85 as well. It is much harder to spark, and it will eat the carbon out from inside your engine. Use the lowest octane fuel you can find.I found a couple of Citgos with 85 octane in my area. Do not worry about detonation. The ethanol will raise your fuel's effective octane by several points.

Just what worked for me and a couple of friends, everytime, no matter what.

Aaron Cake 07-29-03 02:26 PM

The RX-7 is not a FFV (flexible fuel vehicle) so it is a VERY BAD idea to run E85. The rubber and EFI parts are not compatible.

Thats great Aaron, but some of us like to modify, and that sometimes makes it harder to pass emissions.

But thanks for the suggestion.

Aaron Cake 07-29-03 02:30 PM

He didn't mention his car was modded.

J-Rat 07-29-03 02:39 PM

Well, you made a blanket statement, so I responded.

Aaron Cake 07-29-03 02:41 PM

I responded to his post directly. How can that be considered blanket? My response was directed to him, not those with modded cars.

Easy guys :)

If the car is anywhere near stock and has all of its emissions equipment intact, just make sure it's tuned up and everything works. I bombed out on the first smog check with my new motor (HCs were over 1300ppm at idle and the smog guy swore up and down that my apex seals must be gone.) and changed plugs, set the TPS, idle and idle mix. I bombed out with slightly lower HCs. I found that the temp sensor was bad and the engine was running in cold mode all the time. Fixed that and I was at 1000ppm. Found that the port air was being vented to atmosphere due to a misrouted vacuum line and this morning it put out 3ppm!
Bottom line: If you have all your smog gear intact and get everything in good running order you will pass AND have a better-running car with no risk to your fuel system.
My $0.02

Umm, its Alcohol. And for some of us, moving isnt an option. Although thats your standard response everytime this subject comes up.

J-rats Recipe for cheating emissions if its ABSOLUTELY necessary:

1. Turn variable resistor to full lean, or as lean as you can get and still run.

2. Trick ACV into pumping air to the cat all the time by removing the FORWARD UPPER vac hose, and capping it.

3. Run 87 octane

4. Run your tank down till your almost empty.

5. 2-3 bottles of alcohol in the tank. Drive VERY GINGERLY to the emissions station.

6. Once you pass go DIRECTLY to a gas station. And fill up.

Jarrett

My88Se 07-29-03 03:08 PM

What kinds of bootles of alcohol, like those little bottles of isophropyl alcohol?

J-Rat 07-29-03 03:35 PM

Yup

And doing this to a TII is EXTREMELY dangerous. Drive VERY carefully and at your own risk.

Roy James 07-29-03 03:43 PM

Cant any of us go to jail for even thinking about cheating emmisions? I would say get a new cat (even though i know its expensive) and have the air pump directly hooked to it (no ACV at all, unless you have to pass a visual). I dont know anything about this alcohol stuff, but it makes sense that it would burn cleaner.

shit, just put some moonshine in the bitch, LoL jk

Davidov 07-29-03 04:42 PM

My split air pipe was disconnected from the cat by a previous owner.
(it has a metal cap over the end and part of the pipe is gone)

Could I still pass with the split air pipe disconnected, but with the air pump operational?

OR would I have to modify the air pump at all?

Way to go man! I knew Ya could do it!

...so when do I get another Drive?

:D

ImprezedRS 07-29-03 06:44 PM

Okay my car is stock, only thing i have done to it is removed teh power steering and A/C. I also have a Moddified Throttle body sitting here, would it help to have that or not?

Also i heard that you could raise the Idle up almost to the max to make it run somewhat better. I think the max here is 1100 rpm.

I guess I will have to do everthing but the Alcohol and do that for last measures.

The place I'm taking it to is right next door to a gas station, so if I do the alchol I can do the test and then just drive really slowly to the gas station.

Oh what size bottles of Alcohol are you talking about?

ImprezedRS 07-29-03 06:44 PM

oh and where is the variable resistor?
