How is the OMP supposed to work?
 

I started haveing problems with my throttle sticking yesterday. Took a look at it and turns out that the OMP control rod is sticking at the OMP actutor thingy(on the pump). What ive noticed is that the actuator has only about 1/2" of movement max. The rod has to slide down on its hole under closed throttle and at WOT it restricts throttle opening a bit.

Is this the correct operation, should the actuator only move about 1/2"?

Also, is the OMP actuator controling the amout of oil, or is it an on/off switch for the pump (off until certain throttle opening)?

I have an 88 NA if it helps any.

I just checked on my 87se that I have partially apart.. The end of the omp control arm seems to move like 1.3"... at least, more than 1/2". I'd suggest running premix if you can't get it fixed immediately..that way you won't blow your engine if it's malfunctioning!

So that means i need a new OMP, or has anyone had this and repaired it? I can't really see whats wrong with the damn thing, cant get to it from top or bottom really. I guess im runnin pre-mix for now.

The haynes manual tells of a way to test to see if it works... I would DEFINITELY run premix if you do this test.. If it's stuck in the HIGH position, then you really don't have much to worry about--it's just over-lubricating. If it's stuck low...hm....prolly not good. ;) Either way, premix can never hurt.

I'm considering taking the omp off of my 87se.. If I do, i'll sell it to you dirt cheap..maybe free.. PM me in a week or two--hopefully I'll have made up my mind about removing it by then! ;)

actually..hm...this can't hurt:

blast the end of the control arm with some WD-40 or penetrating oil and work it back and forth.. maybe let it sit over night too.. who knows, it may work a miracle! ;)

Also, maybe blast the part on the throttle body too.. could that be the part that's stuck?

I got the WD-40 out right away, will see tomorrow morning. I dont think it will do much. I took the rod off the throtle body end and got my hand down there to work the OMP actuator, it moves about 1/2" and its not like its sticking, its hitting definite limits to its travel, stops right away as if it was supposed to do that. clearly it is supposed to have more travel tho, because it restricts throttle opening under WOT. I will post what hapens tomorrow, thanks for the help, grewatly appreciated.

I fixed it, thanks for your replys! heres the problem:

The omp actuator has a little cylindrical nipple on it that the rod goes thru. This nipple spins to enable the rod to move the actuator thru a wide range of angles. This nipple was seized up on my car and wouldnt let the actuator move up far enough, the rod wuold bind in its hole. as soon as i go tthe rod off and moved it by hand, the actuator moved thru its whole range. If ur throttle gets stuck or doesnt fully open check that rod!
