How mutch play in a brand new GT35R?
Hi!
I just happen to feel the play in my brand new GT35R.. There is actually some play.. How mutch is usual? I want to measure if its correct or not.. SIndre |
turbos always have play, even brand new. However, since its a GT35R, the R denotes ballbearing and it should have VERY little play. A friend of mine went through the same thing recently, his brand new GT35R has noticeable shaft play, so hes concerned its not actually ball bearing.

So this might be a rip off thing?
It has only run 15 sec on my brand new engine and i have tested to spin it befor but cant remember the play.. Anyway, i have a restrictor on it so if its NOT a BB im screwed too. What i did when i got it was to "spinn" test it with a cheap t04 turbo.. mine spunn for ages while the t04 turbo stopped after a few sec.. Hmm well, i dont know :S |
Where did you buy it?
|
I bhought it from TheDJ at the forum. It looks brand new, and doesnt look like any ripoff ive seen before.. Its a GT35R with vband and T4 housing..
|
I looked up some old threads and there are people saying this is usual.. I dont know if i have only side play or play back and forth too. But does anyone know exactly how mutch play is TOO mutch?(so i can measure)

I know some side to side is ok, but you shouldn't have any in and out.
|
okey.. Ill check when i come home. Maybe im just beeing paranoid!

The BB center will spin NOTICEABLY longer when spun with your fingers.
A non-BB center will spin a couple revolutions before it stops. Although the GT35R does use BB's to support the shaft, most have reported that it does have significant play. As long as it doesn't bind when checking play, the turbo is fine - this is the rule of thumb. If you have wheel contact, you'll HEAR it when it's spinning. :( -Ted |
Okey, thanks for good answers.. I guess my turbo is okey the. When the engine stops i can hear the turbo keep spinning without any sound of contact. And when i test the play with my fingers it is a noticable clearence from the compressor/exhaust housing.

All the BB Garrett turbos that I have dealt with (including my own) have had significant play right out of the box. Freaked me out too first time I saw it...

haha i guess they should have a note in the box. "Play is okey" haha...
Anyway, i fired up my 13bRE for the first time today! Great! What a sound :D :D |
theres will always be a difference with shaft play on new turbos when different companies are involved....
a friend of mine bought a t3/4 turbo kit for is KA 240 from turbonetics which happened to be a ball bearing turbo and there was extremely very little shaft play side to side(like less than 1mm) and zero in/out... ive worked with one garret before helping my buddy put a t60-1 on his RB25 and we both got scared cause it had shaft play more then we were ever used to but it checked out. no binding or hitting against the housing.. we called garret support and they said it was normal but if we were very concered they would happily replace the turbo with a newer one with zero play at no cost to us(as in shipping/handling).... we didnt bother cause the turbo did have a warranty for any defects... more than likely you can just call customer support and tell them your worried about the play in your new turbo and they will replace it |

Turbonetics BB is not the same as the Garrett BB... -Ted |
