BDoty311 05-11-03 07:58 PM

89-91- 160 HP

Relisys190 05-11-03 08:33 PM

very good. you beat me too it Bdoty311. oh by the way. those numbers are at the FLYWHEEL.

SonicRaT 05-11-03 08:37 PM

Hmm, strange, my gxl has about 240... Oh, it's that damn evil snail under the hood ;)

brianmcd 05-11-03 08:37 PM

What changed giving the 89 more horsepower? Thanks. I'm new to second gens but I might be getting an 88 GTU soon.

why does the s5 have such a bigger increase in hp, i kno the intake manifold is different, it is that the rotors are different? plz explain thanx

SonicRaT 05-11-03 08:39 PM

Higher compression rotors, and the VDI intake.

brianmcd 05-11-03 08:40 PM

So is it worth buying an 88 GTU with 76k miles on it, or should i wait and get an s5?

SonicRaT 05-11-03 08:41 PM

It's definatly worth it. Get any that you can really, they're both good in their own way. If you can get a s5, get it, if you can get a s4, go with that. Either will make you happy

BDoty311 05-11-03 08:42 PM

Ya the S5s have a different MAF sensor, intake manifold, and have lighter/higher compression rotors. But they are also alittle heavier, so beware....

brianmcd 05-11-03 08:42 PM

I see, 14 HP is a lot though. That would mean it'd take me an exhaust to get just up to stock for an s5, wouldn't it? Thanks for your help. I'm new to second gens. Oh yeah, and are GTU's good? I haven't learned the differences yet.

SonicRaT 05-11-03 08:43 PM

GTU is the best s4 NA as far as sport/racewise. It's the lightest with the best features. For a s5, it's the GTUs.

GTUs are the best n/a model available. They have 4.33 gearing and a few other things I cant think of.

brianmcd 05-11-03 08:47 PM

Ok, cool, thanks guys. Does anyone here have aim so that I can ask em a few questions to educate myself?

yeah, while peak HP is up 14; peak torque is only up 2 ft/lbs in the 89-91... so that extra HP is not worth very much.

Oh yes this reminds me, the S5s redline is 8K instead of 7K. Most of the added power comes from the higher revs, which the S5s were made to maintain.

Icemark 05-11-03 09:14 PM

yeah, peak torque moves from 3500 RPM on a S4 to 4000 RPM on a S5.

jgrts20 05-11-03 10:03 PM

um...............i think they put a bigger snail in it, maybe!! mine has more then 146 only because of the mods i have..........my bad its not stock, PEACE!!

so why did they move the peak torque to 4000?

Additionally, the hp Increase was attributed to a lighter Flywheel, a more adapt ECU and a more "efficient" AFM.

Incrementely, this all added up. Conversely, Individually, not all that significant.:)

We are talking about n/as, not TIIs.
