How much does a TII transmission weigh?

Ive got a mechanic that is going to help me rebuild my transmission, but we are going to drop it in my garage and she is wondering how much it is going to weigh.

Ive tried searching (several times), but I can't seem to find out how much an 88 TII manual transmission weighs. Anyone happen to know how much off the top of their head?

roughly about 130 pounds.
I did a removed and installed a couple transmissions by myself in a driveway.
the N/A is lighter and the TII obviously heavier.
It can be done with one determined person though!

Thanks for the quick response man, I appreciate it.

Use a jack. :)

Find the balance point (a between the aluminum inspection plate and bellhousing) and then just jack it up. Then guide it into place. It helps to tilt the engine down a little.

It can easily be done with one person and a jack. Getting it off is pretty easy since you are working with gravity but don't let it crash down.

Thanks for the advice, it looks like it should be pretty easy.

the last (only) one i did in a driveway, i put the car up as high as i could get it, and then used the jack to lower the thing, and i think it did have to come off the jack to slide out, but its more like pushing it off a cliff....

the way in was the same, once you've jacked it into position, its like half a pushup to get it into the engine.

130lbs seems high to me, i thought it was more like 90, but whatever, its not heavy if you use the jack to lift it ;)

if a turbo 5 speed is 130 pounds how much does the NA 5speed weigh?. Because the auto tran was like 130 pounds. i did an auto to 5 speed swap. and ill tell ya right now that auto was so heavy it dropped like a rock. i could hardly lift it, The 5speed i could pick up myself with two hands easy. i used no jack to put the 5speed in. #1 i didnt have the room. #2 it was light enough that i could get the 5speed in and bolt it up myself.

i'd say about 90 for the T2 and about 60ish for the n/a.

that or i'm more buff than i think...

Thats what I was thinking. Bench pressing that SOB in sucks even if its the 90lbs and not the 130lbs.

Osirus9 10-10-11 02:10 PM

Maybe i'm weak, but I thought the thing weighed closer to150... empty... although I agree with the general concensus of being able to lift it by yourself. It's a whole lot easier to put on if the engine is out of the car too :p

Someone must have weighed one!.(curious to know who is right..haha!)

elliot from turblown! i wanna say the NA was like 68lbs, and the turbo was high 80's? its been a while though.

he and i were arguing over the T2 drivetrain adding a ton of weight, but it turned out that it adds like 30-35lbs to the car

RotaryEvolution 10-10-11 03:26 PM

most of the added weight is on the engine though.
