how much can a GXL LSD handle?

Im planning on doing some stupid things with this car. It has a GXL LSD and im worried about how much it can handle, im planning in the area of 400-500hp/ftlbs.

87 t-66 04-11-07 09:48 AM

no way. maybe like 200hp

happyrock_7 04-11-07 11:36 AM

Its handling more than that now... it went from a 13 sec NA to a carbd 302..

87 t-66 04-11-07 11:56 AM

but how long will it last is the question

mort2002 04-11-07 12:12 PM

i have a buddy that has a 383 that has 420hp in a fc, he has a base model.. 4 lug everything, and it ran a low 12 and is still holding up, been like 2 or 3 years now....

Jager 04-11-07 06:13 PM

That's with an open diff Mort.

Anyhow, alot of V8 guys seems to run them down just fine.

Depends on tires too

I think Zbrown said something one time about his NA LSD holding up just fine with around 400 rwhp and 3xx ft/lbs tq.

Those numbers could be a little off, though.

Couple years between the 2 combos, but im planning on doing something a little better. The original owner(the NA rotary) said it was a gxl lsd, and the current owner (302) said its a T2. Maybe it was switched and is there a definite difference?

RTY PWR 04-20-12 01:35 AM

resurrection! i need to know this too. I've had a t2 swap in my gxl for over a year now, the cars making 300+ and i havent had any issues out of it. but now im going to do an LS1 swap, and i need to know if it will hold it or should i upgrade to the t2 diff and axles or something better. HELPPP

MrGoodnight 04-20-12 01:47 AM

Another ls1, ugh.

I think it it hold up fine for a while, depends on how you drives it.
I snapped an NA stub shaft with a stock NA engine. Just be careful or get a t2 diff

i love the rotary and im not giving up. only reason im swapping is for reliability and mpg and still keep the 7. its not official yet, just want more power and more reliability

Furb 04-20-12 03:38 AM

I don't ever get that..
the sole reason for me to own an RX-7 is the rotary engine, in fact, i love the rotary more then the rx-7 itself..

I am almost positive i will do a swap in the future.. putting a rotary in a car which appeals to me more then the FC ;)

Something like ~300 ft. lbs of torque at the wheels going through my NA LSD, and it's still working fine. I ran a stock turbo for 3 years before it too.

RTY PWR 04-22-12 04:09 AM

awesome. well i decided against it. i love the way my car sounds. i just want external wastegate turbo. so im gonna have my buddy custom build me one, and keep the same power levels so i dont need to upgrade too much of my current setup.

I've broken one (It was a 88 GTU, but same part) from repeated high rpm drag launches with a puck clutch.

kdwebber 04-22-12 06:32 PM

nothing is worse than listening to rotary guys whine about engine swaps ( and I have a REW)

anyways the stock GXL differential and axles (if not already worn out) won't last more than ten minutes from a proper v8 thrashing. A friend of mine imploded his the first time he had a little fun with it. 7 inch ring gear is no good.

2-3 years of regular thrashing on my 3.909 N/a LSD at the strip, and it hasn't died yet! :icon_tup: It's not about how much power it will handle, but it's taking care not to abuse a "weaker" part. i'm sure you could put 500FT of torque thru it, as along as it was smooth, and you didn't drop the clutch or something stupid.

RTY PWR 04-23-12 10:53 PM

i dotn like launches anyway, ill usually do pulls from like 10-15mph rolls
