Do they check the timing in Ohio? If not, just retard the timing. NOx will increase, but these cars usually have a lot of leeway with regard to NOx. You can drop the HC number by a third by doing this. That is why the nefarious California Test Only Stations check the timing every time.

Do you know any mechanics well enough to get the test faked? I pay $80 (the normal inspection is $40) and dont even take my FC out of my garage. I have passed inspection with no cats, and once with no engine.

remove the cap from your variable resistor and mark the screw's location. turn your variable resistor counterclockwise all the way and turn it back in about 1/16 turn and retest it at the smog facility.

It sounds like your acv is not working and or your catalytic converter is not up to spec. Check and make sure the acv is in working order. There are about three simple tests in the factory service manual that can confirm if it's good or bad. Did I mention the free, online, factory service manual?
That along with the advive given above plus new sparkplugs/airfilter/spot on timing/idle adjusted to the fsm |
he is only slightly rich at idle, the variable resistor should be able to cure that problem easy enough. even a proper working cat can't necessarily burn all the fuel going through it.

he has a high flow cat
|
Which highflow cat?
