How to lookup trim level

I searched around and couldn't find anything:

On the title the car is listed as BASE. However the car has tons of goodies; LSD with the longer gears in conjunction, sunroof, and some other things i can't remember off the top of my head but that lead my friend, who seems to be fairly knowledgeable in these respects, to believe it's a higher trim level than what the title suggests, GTU maybe. But i have no idea, I can't find anything that would tell me if the car is a higher trim or if someone installed all this stuff afterwords. The car has been repainted numerous times so the stickers aren't there, i don't have the factory service manual and all the goodies from when you buy a car from the dealership because the car has been through 8! different owners...All i have that i can think to use to look it up is the VIN, and everywhere i look it up just shows me it's an N/A model and lists off all the different trim levels it MAY be, but not one in particular. It does show it was a 2+2 from factory, which is cool but doesn't help much with the trim level itself.

I'd like to know, so is there anyone that can clue me in or direct me somewhere that will tell me for sure WHAT my car was sold from the dealership as? It's gotta be listed somewhere if not in the VIN itself...SOMEWHERE...

you didn't mention anything about your car so you're on your own, but i can list a crib sheet.

86-88
rear wiper, NA = GXL. will also have sunroof, power windows, 4 piston brakes, seats with separate headrests, cruise control.

5 lug wheels but no rear wiper? its a sport, or someone put the 5 lug stuff on a base model.

base, 4 lug. manual windows. everything else is optional.

SE is a base with a sticker, and usually a sunroof

GTU, 88 only, has the turbo seats, mirrors, rear wing, 5 lugs, manual windows

turbo, has a 2 in the vin, JM1FC332.

1989-1990 only

GTU is the base model, non vented rear brakes, no rear wiper, headrests are built into the seats.
GTUs is no sunroof, with the turbo wheels, vented brakes, T2 seats, manual windows.
GXL, is like the S4, its got rear wiper and sunroof, power windows. seats have separate headrests, leather is optional.

1991+

they just have the coupe, the A package is i think power windows and a sunroof, and B package makes it like a GXL.

Was it a sticky? My bad; I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything lol. Thanks though.

It's an 87 N/A, No rear wiper, has a sunroof, manual windows, power mirrors, single pot brakes (4 lug), no cruise control, no power steering, nada on the separate headrest, doesn't have the turbo bucket seats, and has the rear seats. Didn't come with a wing from the factory; that was added by an owner (and they did a shotty job, too...). It's got an LSD but there's no way of knowing whether or not that was from the factory, i can't tell if anyone has been in there before.

I'm guessing that narrows it down to maybe an SE? Which is nothing real special but at least i know now.

Mazda didn't keep any records about what got what from the factory in relationship to VIN number. Or if they did they are long gone and were never made public. The cars are pretty lego like and stuff gets swapped around all the time. Since it has four lugs chances are those are original as it would be exceptionally rare for someone to downgrade from the 5 lugs which allows you to narrow down what the car most likely shipped as. 87 was a split year for options. If it's an 87 it was most likely had the Luxury Package as the base model didn't have a sunroof option or electric mirrors.

If it's an 87.5 based on VIN number than you've got a bitsa car. Because the combination of options you've described didn't exist from the factory. Assuming that the 4 lugs haven't been downgraded 4 lug cars didn't get power windows in 87.5.

And all of the above was deduced from the sticky that j9fd3s linked.

its a base model with some upgrades, an SE would be an 88, and probably power steering

Yeah i took a look at that sticky (Which i apologize again for completely missing...) and that's the conclusion i came to as well, Luxury package. What would that equate to in the general terms everyone uses? IE, GTU, GTUs (S5 right?) GXL etc. I'd assume it would just be listed as LX for Luxury, but I've never seen anyone use that term when describing their FC, just the ones above. I'm not exactly new to the scene or anything, I've just never been able to find anything solid to learn off of. I didn't even know there was a Luxury model, i just went off of what I've found around the forums which, in no particular order, is something like Base, Sport, GTU, GTUs, GXL and then TurboII

The dealer can run the VIN and tell you the original trim. My guess is that it was a base model with the Luxury package. However, the original trim is trivial at this point in time.

"Base" or "Luxury" would be fine, but I wouldn't use "LX". If you don't mind a longer description, maybe something like "Luxury Base with LSD" or "4-lug NA with LSD" may better describe your car when you are asking questions on this forum.
