How I changed My Manual Transmission Fluid

5 Attachment(s)
I took a look at my Transmission and said How the hell am I going to Fill that with a Bottle? So I thought about it and came up with this idea....... First I took off the filler plug and then the Drain plug and drained out the old. It was old for sure and I thought it was cool how the drain plug had a magnet on it. Anyway I came up with this contraption.

First I cut a hole in the top of one of the Oil Cap and Put a old compressor hose in the hole.

Cut it about 2 1/2 ft. and drilled a small hole in the top side of the oil and put my air blower Thing in the hole.
Attachment 719835
Turn down the psi and put the bottle together
Attachment 719836
Presto! It worked :)
Attachment 719837
Now just put the drain plug back in and put the hose into the fill plug and go to town :) Make sure not to overfill.

I think arron cake did a write up on a strategy the same as this a while back, his looked a little more nifty but the same thery, deffiently would try this if i wouldnt be afraid of the container exploding.

I've done it three different ways:

1) Basting syringe. Pour fluidin a tub, suck it up, squirt inside. Works OK, but takes a long time and you will get dirty.

2). Fish tank lines + funnel. Get some cheap $5 lines from Wal-mart (the one that has a line running to a small plastic tube. Looks like a pick up tube or something) and attach it to the funnel. Run up under the car and into the tranny. Takes about 20 mins since the oil is so thick.

3) Oil gun or pump. Works the best and is only about $8. Took me all of 2 mins to fill up. I got one made by valvoline.

I doubt the container will explode... Just turn down the psi.

13b_cookie_monster 10-17-07 11:34 PM

thats cool but a $3 pump would have done the same.

SpeedOfLife 10-17-07 11:47 PM

yeah, this has been done before. +1 for at least coming up with it on your own though

Aaron Cake 10-18-07 01:26 PM

You mean like the writeup I did at least 5 years ago? :)

haha some kid did that at work i told him what to do and let him go at it i told him to be cairfull because if theres to much pressure then it will explode. so im back in my bay working and all of a sudden i hear a huge booooommm i tured and looked and he was covered in oil and so was the floor so it deffenatly is possable just learn from other peoples mistakes

wish I could see pics of that, or even better, video. that'd be hilarious

thebigbluecan 10-18-07 08:05 PM

ha ha that does sound funny:lol: ... But he must have had the pressure up too high because when i did it it barely expanded.

Hey, at least he didn't post a "How do I change my transmission fluid?" thread! :suitdance

Well me and a friend filled his turbo II swap for the first time using a funnel and some fuel line. Gravity works wonders ;\

andersonvann 10-18-07 11:17 PM

this thread reminds me...i need to change mine!

Yeah, just don't try in when the temps are freezing. That's when you find that viscosity rules over gravity.

Normally I just lean my car up against a tree with a handy man jack but then I found this here doo hicky and was like wow, simple is good.

you can also just take the shifter boots off and run the hose down the side through the shifter opening. it's a good idea to replace the oil in the shifter housing at the same time anyways.

Excellent idea...will try this way for sure...with rags everywhere just in case.

I like the oil pump method...even with the oil pump you have to be careful since some will spit out the hose from the pump, not fun.

Also, Aaron +9879872 your site is still up...some old school rotary info ones are gone. :(

That's what I do. Gotta be careful not to spill any oil in the interior though, that stuff is nasty!

Best idea I've heard so far! How does one drain the fluid in the shifter housing? Is it just a matter or siphoning it out? Does it take the same fluid?
