how hard is it to pull an engine?
It's time for a rebuild and I'm trying to avoid labor costs by pulling the engine myself. I'm a very poor college student, so I have no choice. Is there a website with maybe a walk through or could any of you who have done it give some tips to make it as smooth as possible? Thanks.

I pulled my engine and tranny out in about 4.5hrs. Leave everything on the engine block and just disconnect the stuff you need to take it out. Its really not all that hard to do. If you do it that way I described with leaving all the stuff on then engine you will need to remove the harness along with the engine. Do that by unpluging it from the ECU and pull it out throught the hole it goes into on the fire wall. Be carfull with the harness thought because they do tend to be quite brittle over the years. Hope that helps. Good Luck

I am going to be doing this same thing in about a week. However, on 89-91 TII's, will I have to remove the ABS pump to squeeze the engine out of there?

Pretty straightforeward job - make sure you drain the oil and coolant before starting the job!! I second 1fastTII's advice about disconnecting the harness from the ECU and pulling it through the firewall..
Otherwise follow the directions in the shop manual. series 4 can be found at: iluvmyrx7.com series 5 can be found at: fc3s.org |

don't forget to label which wire/plug goes where... that could become a problem.

the fastest we ever pulled one was 15 minutes snip snip. 1980 we built into a race car.

If this is the first time you are pulling the motor, you may want to take pictures (even a disposable flash camera or two is okay) on everything you unplug or un-bolt.
It will save you time when you go to drop it or another back in and you can refer to the pictures to see where that bolt went or which fuel line went were, Etc. |

Good luck. Wish I could come up to help out, but I'll be busy with other stuff :(
