How good is the stock oil cooler?
 

Well, I have always wanted to know if the Fd3s dual oil coolers would fit on the fc3s with some minor custom work.

the FC3S oil cooler is the best one, more than you'll ever need, no reason to downgrade

you running a front mount or over 400RWHP or live in the desert? then you don't need anything other than the OEM cooler.

i live in the desert and plan to run around 400whp, what oil coolers are out there that would be good to go with?and how bad do i NEED one?

i've been beating the piss out of my fc here in AZ where it gets EXTREMELY HOT and my temps NEVER get to high, just because the oil coolers are off a newer car doesn't make them BETTER.

what usually kills the oil coolers ability to do it's job is front mounts, preheating the air to the oil cooler and radiator really puts a strain on the cooling system of the engine. V mounts are a more practical way to go if you can. if you really need something better i think 2 FC oil coolers would work much better than the FD dual oil cooler setup.

If you've got a front mount and a body kit with some reasonably large side openings, then running dual oil coolers makes a lot of sense. The rotary depends on oil for about 1/3 of all cooling, so why would you want to try to shove all of the cooling, plus the intercooler into one opening when there's 3 available? I'd put the coolers on the sides, so that they can get clean, cool air, also it'd help out with water cooling, as the air getting to the rad won't be heated up as much by the time it gets to the rad.

Road racers with NA FC's mostly run 2 stock oil coolers, because their oil gets too hot with just the single stock cooler, but for street use it's more than adaquate.

trust me. I get it hot. I drift and after only 3 to 4 non stop laps in a short 1/2 mile track i always have to stop and let car idle for over 15 mins and then another 10 to 15 min with the car off just so i can do another 4 freaking laps. Its pretty darn annoying. I just need a better oil cooling system. trust me stock is not enough for circuit use. and dont tell me it is cause as you see i have personally experienced this!

I always tought about welding 2 fc3s oil coolers to make a bad ass one. but i though it would be tricky do to it being "u" flow.

like i mentioned most of the heat is generated by the front mounts and why a V mount is a better option if you can't place the oil cooler to allow for fresh cool air. nothing wrong with duals if you have the space for them to breathe and the money to purchase a good set of them, problem i see is they are smaller than the OEM large single oil cooler which is why i don't want to suggest trading one problem for another, also remember that the OEM location sees fresh air at idle with the fan pulling air through, located in the brake ducts they will only get cooling while the car is moving.

black91n/a has the same mind set here. I do not run a front mount. I simply pushed back the radiator and squeezed it in front of it. I personally hate front mounts do to me being a drift/circuit driver who preffers all the engine response you can get. Without making it front mount i saved about 2 feet +/- of intercooling pipe.(= engine response)

But again since it is not a front mount is will get more heat specially with oil cooler heating things up for rad/intercooler. There for i think dual side mount oil coolers for fd3s would be more suitable for what my fc3s is used for.

So instead of bashing my ideas how about if anyone knows if it can be done or if you guys can give me some new ideas. about way better oil cooling.

V mount would be nice. i would preffer that but im a cheap bastard=D

I'd still call it a front mount, since it's mounted in front of the rad, in the front of the car. Maybe it's not as "front mount" as others, but it's in the same boat.

I don't know about welding two together, it's a lot easier to just run 2 in parallel.

If you can spread out the cooling between several sources of air then do it, but two FD oil coolers might not be enough. One problem with drifting is that the engine's constantly being revved really high, but the speeds aren't that high, so airflow is much less, that makes the cooling problems even worse than on a track car.

Could try adding a water-cooled oil cooler in series with stock cooler.

Ok for what it's worth, I have NEVER seen a stock oil cooler on any car as big as an FC oil cooler. They are around twice as big as most of the other ones I've seen.

Have you seen the coolers on an FD? theyre not all that big. Youd be way better off going with 2 FC coolers, itd be cheaper, easier, and youd get better results.

Start with a properly-installed oil temp gauge, so you can gauge (haha, pun!) need and improvement.

Heck throw on the FD coolers and triple cool it. Take advantage of all 3 holes.
