how do you set the idle?

How do you set the idle on a 2nd gen 13b? ive heard about setting it higher after a rebuild so it doesnt stall, but i cant figure out how to set it. any ideas?(thanks in advance)

1987RX7guy 01-11-03 07:22 PM

You can adjust the idle by using the TPS(throttle position sensor) there is a screw on the front side of the throttle linkage give it a couple of turns and you will notice the idle changing.

DC350 01-11-03 07:32 PM

are you serious? dont change that you could mess up everything. that screw needs to be adjusted with a multimeter. (for hesitation problems and such)

On the top of the dynamic chamber where it says INJECTION 13b there is a screw covered by a rubber cap. Change it with a flat head scre driver. your idle will increase or deacrease dependin on which way you turn it

1987RX7guy 01-11-03 07:38 PM

Listen dude I adjusted it about a week ago and my car is fine I understand that you should be cautious about what you do to it but just don't turn it all the way to either side (idle before adjusting 2500rpm after 1500rpm ) the srew at the top will only adjust about 500rpm in either direction for fine tunning

DC350 01-11-03 07:40 PM

uhh, okay. Then whats the other screw on the dynamic chamber for

Your not supposed to adjust your TPS when your trying to adjust your ide speed

1987RX7guy 01-11-03 07:52 PM

They are both for that but as far as I know the one on the dynamic chamber is for fine adjustments there is a range of about 500rpms with that one but I lowered my rpms with the screw that is on the TPS and my car's only hesitation is the 3800rpm one which alost everyone knows about. If you lived close to me I would show you it does not fuk anything up unless you turn it most or all of the way in either direction

ilovemy87gxl 01-11-03 07:53 PM

wait a second... what other screw on the dynamic chamber? i only see one. and it only moves a little, adjusting it about 500rpms like 87rx7guy said. im just trying to do it temp so the rebuild doesnt stall. i read about checking ohms and all, but i cant get it started without pushing/towing yet, so i need to have it done right the first time.

1987RX7guy 01-11-03 08:01 PM

The screw I am talking about is not on the top of the vdi it is on the throttle linkage yo know the things that move when you push on the gas pedal have a friend push down the gas pedal and you watch to see what move the stuff that is on the front part of the intake that is where the screw is if you know wherre the TPS is (little black piece that is also on the front of the intake when the gas pedal is not deppressed the throttle likage rests on it then it should not be very far from there I have to do somthin really quick b back in 5

ilovemy87gxl 01-11-03 10:01 PM

tried this screw, adjusted it one way, then the other. no change either time. this blows.

Spraintz 01-11-03 10:37 PM

Ok dude, warm up engine. turn off car. then you need to jumper your ititial set connector(2-pin green connector by yer battery) with a wire. then start the car. then use the screw on top of the throttle body until your idle is where you want it. turn off car. unjumper that connector. turn the car on then it should stay at where you set it.

this is the FSM describing idle setting
http://www.fc3s.org/how_tos/manuals/...SYSTEMS_NA.pdf

Spraintz 01-12-03 02:06 AM

i sure hope you saw the FSM before jackin with the TPS to set the idle

1987RX7guy 01-12-03 02:12 AM

I did it and my car is OK unless my car is the only one that can be messed with cm'on why the hell would I make up the stuff I mean I have adjusted the TPS twice already my car runs great I just opened a can of whoop ass two days ago on a civic and an eclipse I had no hesitations except for 3800rpm one but I just down shift and problem solved 5k to 7k nothin but acceleration.

stillmatic 01-12-03 02:13 AM

My car idles really high when you start it (right after ignition) and the guy at the mazda repair shop said its normal... Is that to burn ne extra fuel? Or?

rx_7_driver 01-12-03 02:23 AM

that is the 3k start up it's normal, if u tap the gas it will stop and idle down

DC350, i'm with you, this is the screw i use to adjust my idle, never heard of useing the tps to adjust it

When it does that it is to heat up the cats so they function properly after about five min. it should go away but the reason I adjuste the TPS is because my car would idle at about 2500rpm even after warming up and driving for a half hour that really wasts a lot of fuel funning the engine at 2.5k while waiting for the damn light ot turn green. I still idle a bit high(1.5k) but I still have to fine tune it with the vdi screw to get it to a little below 1k rpm but that is a thirty sec. job "no prob bob".

Spraintz 01-12-03 02:34 AM

Ok, 1987RX7guy, you may have been able to use yer TPS to adjust idle, I'm just saying that is NOT the proper way to set it.

i hear of more people messing up their idle and throttle response by messing with the TPS when it didn't need messin with.

also, if yours used to idle at 2500 and you can only get it down to 1500 then there are other things wrong.

good luck, have fun

1987RX7guy 01-12-03 02:39 AM

it is closer to 1400-1450 but yeah I know somthin is wrong.

1987RX7guy 01-12-03 02:43 AM

You are probably right but I think that if somthin is named throttle position sensor you can adjust it for the the amount off throttle given at idle. you proly should listen to spraintz but my car is still ok IMO just got to do the fine adjustment (like I said ) wit the screw on the vdi.

chrisrx7101 01-12-03 03:10 AM

I hear some guys here talking about their car idling @ 1500 rpm ??? I have an 87 GXL that idles @ 500 solid... the indicator does'nt move it usually idles around 1500 until it gets warm then it goes down to 500 nice and smooth.. (after the engine has warmed up of course)

this is all good right????

Thanks!!

Chris

1987RX7guy 01-12-03 03:14 AM

mine does that about 70% of the time also I just want it lower then 1k rpm. all the time but mostly after a good run through the gears will make mine idle at about 900rpm.

DC350 01-12-03 04:39 AM

last time i had to adjust the TPS because of irradic harsh bucking and stuttering. I wouldn't screw around with the TPS unless you want some not fun problems in the near Future.

Me and Shawn have it down
