How do you remove the shift knob?

I got a 88 RX7 and the OEM shift knob is pretty worn out and was thinking to replace it. However, I cant seem to take off the knob so does anyone know how to remove the shift knob? I tried very hard turning it counter clockwise but no luck.......

Any input is appreciated

If you don't care about the shifter take off using a pair of vice grips. After you take it off make sure the threading on the shifter isn't stripped. On my series 5 some stupid kid stripped it and used wood glue to keep the shifter on. Good Luck

I think it just screws off.

you might not be ready to work on your own car if you cannot tackle this simple job. the secret is there is a jam nut that provides tension against the shifter so that it doesn't move around. pull the shifter boot down a little and use a wrench to loosen the jam nut. then the shift knob should just unscrew real easy like.

sorry i might not be as technical/mechanical you are, hence needing some guidance from the fellow rx7 owners here. :(

Is the jam nut sitting right below the shifter knob? what does it look like?
I apologize for all the noob questions......

Thanks again

I must have The Idiots Guide To Import Cars. My S5 shifter just twists off. Now I'm jealous that the OP has the Import Car for Advanced Owners.

It looks like a nut. Its metal and shiny. It has two flat spots where a wrench can grab it.

I believe S4 generally has the nut, and S5 just twists off (no nut).

There is no damn jam nut, I've never encountered one on my s4 or my s5, the things just twist off.
