How do you do the geyser test?
 

I did a search and come up with little information. I read some people do it with the engine running, some with ignition disabled, some only say a geyser is bad, some say anything but consistent bubbles is bad...so confusing!

Could someone post up how to do the geyser test and what to look for?

Not 100% sure, but I think to do the test you let the car cool right down, like let it sit over night. Then pop the hood, pull the rad cap off, and start the car. If coolant "geysers" out of the rad then you got yourself a big problem on your hands.

I'm pretty sure Justin is right, that's the procedure if I remember correctly. Just out of curiousity, why do you suspect coolant seal failure? Does your exhaust have sweet smelling white smoke, or is your car drinking coolant (like it seems to be leaking out and you gotta add more frequently)?

Coolant seal failure. If they are bad, the engine needs to be torn apart to replace them. Coolant seal failure is always a BAD thing :D.

From the FAQ:

I think my engine has been overheated. How can I check to see if the coolant seals are good?
Fill coolant system ALL THE WAY UP (engine cold). Make sure that the fluid level is as high as you can get it. Leave the filler cap off. Remove the EGI fuse. Crank the motor (it should not start). If you get a LARGE amount of coolant coming out of the coolant fill, its safe to assume your coolant seals are blown. Also, a good indication is a fuel/exhaust smell in the coolant.

It should still work even if you don't remove the EGI fuse shouldn't it?
