How Do I Test Ignition Module?
 

How do you test the ignition module beyond producing sparks?

I am trying to figure out why my 1988 RX7 is doing this: If I open the throttle quickly it stutters and revs drop straight away and will not increase if the trottle is held open.

However, it will increase fine if I accelerate steadily. I am in the process of checking for vacuum leaks and if thats not the problem then i want to at least know that the ignition modules are in spec.

I have new wires and plugs.

any suggestion is much appreciated.

That doesn't sound like an ignition problem, but the FSM has coil pack check procedures if you want to be sure.

I am having the same exact problem, if you resolve your problem please let me know. I'll do the same for you. I just pulled my ignition modules off and talking the to Advanced Auto part in the morning. They can do a full test on them there. That is the easiest was to test them.

just put the sparkplug end of your plug wires in your mouth and place both hands on the fender while a friend cranks the motor, this should tell you what you need to know.:)

I must also note that anyone who tries this probably will not have two hands due to being a dumb redneck.....So one hand will be sufficient.

On a more serious note, when this first happened, I took it to a local shop and they did not get it fixed, I went through the vacuum system and can't find any leak. I had a friend with an mx3 and he had the same problem and after months searching, it turns out to be his disty.:scared:

I have pulled the coils but yet to test them, let me know how your test at the auto store turns out.

Did you test your boost sensor (MAP sensor)? The TPS and MAP are the two systems most responsible for throttle enrichment (which will avoid the sputter when floored, Think of it as an accelerator pump for a carburetor.) This does not sound like an ignition problem to me (although seriously retarded timing may cause this.)
