How do I break in a newly rebuilt engine??
 

My uncle was/is a mechanic (now more of a supervisor) and even owned an FB in his day and told me that I should stay away from freeway driving for the first 1000 miles and only do street driving at various speeds doing various breaking and getting various temperatures to solidify the seals and all...

A friend of mine who recently bought a new Suburu WRx finally broke his in to 1000 miles and is telling me that you actually do want to do freeway driving and climb various speeds from 50 to 80 down to 60 and then to 70....

Whats the best thing to do for the engine??

I have always heard that you just gotta take it easy for atleast 1000 miles. No getting on it alot, reving it it really high, and trying to race it. I dont think you should stay away from the freeways, just stay away from high RPM's.

i was told dont drive it on the freeway or rev it over 4 or 5 thousand rpms for 1000 miles. the stop and go city traffic is good for it. you should also change the oil alot more often than usual

for first 1000 miles, stay under 4000rpm but the engine needs to see varying loads. i.e. city driving, not so much highway driving where the engine is at a constant speed. I'm not too sure about oil changes, but I know they are very important. I think you change it after first 25 or so miles, then again at like 200 maybe? at 500, then 1000. Once again I am not positive about these incraments.

dont rev above 4k

dont lug the engine-really low rpms.

dont drive faster than 70

freeway would be ideal considering when freeway driving, you're going a constant speed and keeping low rpms

You can do some freeway driving. Just keep changing your rpms but dont exceed 5k. I also would recommend doing about 1500 miles. Change oil at about 250 and again at ~600 and a final time at the end of break-in. If turbo DO NOT GO INTO BOOST.

The thing about the freeway driving is that the car is at a specialist whos about 30-35 miles away from my home... Ive already dumped a good $200 into having it towed to one specialist and then to this one thats fixing the engine now.... I really dont want to pay another $100 just to tow home a perfectly drivable car cuz its a $100 that I could really use...

low rpm miles are good from what i hear

I drove my fresh engine with port job home on the highway about 150km (or 90 miles). It was totally fine, just make sure while your on the highway do some accelerating and decelerating and just vary the rpm while on the highway. You don't have to vary it alot, just don't rev past 4500rpm and don't bog the engine down too much, as in no trying to accel when at 1500rpm in 5th gear. For me I did about 500miles before first oil change. City driving is better for break in though, but its not required you only drive in the city. And don't listen to people who tell you not to go past a certain speed. Its more about the rpm then how fast your going. If you can keep it under 4k rpm then its fine.

To get the best compression out of your engine the first 1500 miles are essential. City driving is the best cause it forces you to push varying loads. Keep the car under 3500 rpm. DOnt let it idle too much keep driving, cause they like to flood. after 500 miles let it take about 4 to 3 pounds of boost every know and then but keeps the rpms under 4000.
I acutally ran in my car for 3000 miles with new rotor housngs and now have a compression of 150psi, on front and back. the more you run it in the better the compression will be.
