how did you pull your engine?
Hey all
right now my rx7 has one tranny bolt and an oil cooler line holding it in, and im prolly gonna remove the engine this weekend, or whenever i get around to it. but my question is how did you guys take your engine out? me and my friend are just thinking about getting a really beefy steel tube and some chain and lifting it out rather than spending a couple hundred on a cherry picker. so has anyone else dont that? |
If the engine is stripped (block only), then you can probably remove it without a hoist. But it MAY take some serious effort to unplug it from the transmission. Whenever I do this, I always remove the transmission first. It's much easier to take the engine out that way (lifts straight up), and I can replace the transmission seals while I'm there.
I would seriously recommend getting a hoist. You can rent one for around $20 or so. Much safer and easier then lifting it out manually. |
yeah that just the thing, it may cost like $20 bucks or sometihng to rent one for a day but i know im probably gonna use it more than a day and then it start to come to about the same amount of a 2 ton hoist, and im just hesitant of buying one

If you use a garage with exposed roof trusses you could use a comealong to pull it out. I'd still get a hoist and pull it. It's not worth throwing out your back or somthing.

I did it that way with a friend. It was a mistake. Neither of us could move the next day.

$120 is a great deal. I'd jump on it if I didn't have my hoist already. Get one, it will make your life easier. Even if you don't need it after you're done, just resell it. I'd bet you will get at least most of your money back.

I pulled the motor out of the parts car I just bought with a tow truck.. I just unbolted the motor mounts, cut the wiring harness and oil cooler lines, unbolted the trans mounts, cut the exhaust off, pulled the plug wires, and yanked. it took about an hour and a half, total. I wouldn't recommend doing it that way though, I only had a very limited time to pull the motor, so thats why it ended up getting done that way. I've pulled a motor from a parts car before without using a hoist, you need to strip it bare (you can leave the turbo on if you have to but its like 40lb lighter without). I used 2 2x4's and some nylon webbing, and 3 people. it was heavy but not impossible. |
$120 is great, and your engine weighs no where near 2 tons let alone 1... so it'll serve more than your purposes.
I was going to buy one but someone lent me theirs for a long time, so I got off easy... it will save you a lot of hassle! --Gary |
$40 1 1/2 ton chain hoist hooked to a 4X4 integral beam in the garage. Pulled tranny & engine together. Pushed car backwards as they came out, pulled car forwards as they went back in. An equalizer for the engine chains would have made it even easier...

Like they said....its more convinient and easy if you buy one of the hoist things but like Terrh said....its not impossible to do it without one....me and my uncle tripped the block....put a chain around the muffler pipe of another car...it was a very hard one...and since it was a parts car with fucked up shock absorbers we got up on the the car and pulled up then slowly stepped off the car and set the engine on the ground....if you decide to do it that way....be smart.....use your knees to lift up not your back....so you wont end up like yearrgh and his friend.

The cost of a rental or $120 to buy is cheaper than any bodywork that might be needed if you screw up.

ive pulled a t2 short block (almost completly stripped) with liquids sitll in it using my back. it sucked ass. buy the hoist.

bought the hoist, heavy as shit, but its worth it 127.33 taxes and all. at pep-boys really worth it. 2 ton capacity folds up and its red but now i need an engune sling

Mx6-Rx7 Addict and I pulled my motor with a 2x4 and a chain. Probably not the best idea out there, but it worked. Getting the motor off the tranny was a bit painful, and it almost looked like the 2x4 wasn't going to make it. I've also pulled a short block with 3 other friends just using our bare hands....that was pretty tough on the backs, but nothing serious.

definatly use a hoist.. even just lifting the engine off the ground with 2 ppl take a bit of effort and gets heavy after carrying it for half a minute

Took 2 hours by myself to strip my car from running to no motor. Pulled it out with a hoist alone and put it back in 2 hours later and had it running an hour later. That was a fun night...

heh yeah its easy when you have VW bugs thier so damn easy to get the engine out of 4 bolts 4 wires and 3 minutes all it takes and it just comes right out
but yeah the enginge sling i wanna get is the better glory one that is adjustable and has chains comin off of it, i love impulse buying its just lovely:) |
