How common is manual steering?

I have found a manual steering rack at a junk yard. It looks to be in pretty good shape. ANyone know how wanted/rare this is? how much it is worth?

I also found an aluminum n/a hood, but they want a good bit of money for it. :(

also how much power would it free up for me to put on the manual steering/how much harder to steer?

It's pretty common. Base (and I believe sport?) models had manual steering. The rack is probably worth $30.

I would say common when I went to the junk yard to get mine there were 4 7's in the yard with manual's. Buy it install it enjoy it :)

Manual racks are fairly common. But if it is in good condition, you could sell it for anywhere between $50 and $100, depending on the buyer.

I got one and swapped it in for my power steering rack. You don't gain much power, but you reduce weight a little bit. And it gives you a better feel for the road. It is not hard at all to turn when you are driving, but can take a little effort to turn the wheel at a standstill or when going real slow.

I may just swap it in my T2 then :D

What about the AL n/a hood?

Well, how much $ do they want for it and what shape is it in? Will you need to repaint it?

nonameo 12-27-02 05:38 PM

ah they want 125..

Outch! There is one locally that I hope will still be in the J/Y once I finish off my rebuild . . . has a few dings, slight rolled front edge, fixable and they want $50. I am going to repaint my NA anyway so I am hoping I can get it.

Considering that it is $700 new and a C/F hood is like 3-4x the cost of the one you saw, it might still be a good buy if you have the $. I think it should save 15ish pounds.

As an aside, look at how expensive the T2 hoods are on Ebay and in the parts section here . . .

ah well I have a T2. I was looking to resell it.

what about using the power rack as manual?

Manual Rack and Pinion

I just paid $75 for a manual rack and another $14 for shipping. One of the guys here on the site said that if he had one he would hold out for $125. He told me I got a good deal.

Considering that a rebuilt power rack and pinion is just shy of $500 and that Mazda wants $1300 for a new one, I thought that <$100 was a pretty good deal.

One more thing.....Mazda wanted $130 for a rebuild kit for the power unit, but you need special tools to do the rebuild. It seems that you pay what it is worth to you at the time.

My dad always said to consider purchases like this, "The day two fools met. He was a fool for asking that much and you were a fool for paying that much".
