How to check if a motor is dependable???

Hi, I am looking at a 88 rx-7 N/A and it runs but I want to make sure that it is not going to die the first wek I have it due to some motor rig or whatever, and clues on tell tale signs of a rotory dying? It does drive, with no smoke but feels a little wimpy compared to a 86 that I had 5 years ago.

not being smart just a dumb question- if its gonna be dependable - you have driven one so you should know what to look for but ask questions and tell them you know what an rx7 is so no bs'ing...you cant judge an rx7 by its cover of course so its really a gamble...you might want to check the cats to see if they are clogged check compression to see what that is like....

welcom to the 2nd gen forum.........compression test with a test should see 3 bumps of 90psi, on each rotor

Is that with a Mazda compression tester or a normal one?

RexRyder 10-10-02 06:48 PM

any compression tester will work as long as you remove the check valve so it dunt hold a reading. Clean the shit around the plug 1st. block throttle open, yank EGI fuse, crank couple seconds to get extra fuel out an put the tester on upper plugs.

Thanks...why is it though that people reccomend a Mazda one? Are they more accurate or is that just false information.

Hey marcus219, where about in Olympia do you live. Haven't seen many Olympia fokes around here.

The mazda one has the ability to measure each rotor fae individually...

A normal gauge also has this capability, but only if you read it real fast :D

thanks for the clarification on that autocrash. I live out on Cooper Point Rd. Matlock..I also have a buddy that lives in Lacey with a silver 87 RX-7 NA, you might have seen it...loud ass exhaust single exhaust...were porting his intake manifold right now..stock exterior though.

I live on Yelm Highway. Lake Point area (by the train station). We shall get together sometime. I can always use some help on my TII project. Look for me in a Red 86' N/A with full RB exhaust.

Sounds like a plan..right now I'm recovering from my surgery I had a couple weeks ago. So it'll be awhile until I'll be able to get back wrenching (my passion). But as soon as I do, I'd be happy to help out.

Matlock 10-10-02 07:49 PM

Hope it wasn't anything serious.

marcus219 10-10-02 07:52 PM

Had a tumor in at the top of my tibia in my leg, second time I've had it done, this time they did a bone graph from my hip...thats what hurts the worst...I just hope it doesn't come back this time..downtime sucks!!

Matlock 10-10-02 07:58 PM

Man, sorry to here about that. Hope you have a fast recovery. Bone graph, ouch!

marcus219 10-10-02 08:11 PM

Thanks man, I hope I do too. As soon as I get up and moving around...yourself, my buddy, and I will have to meet, talk to you later.

Check for bubbles coming up in the coolant. Thats a bad sign.

Compression test.

One thing that people overlook, check the fluids out! If you pull the dipstick out and the oil is black or smells of coolant or gas, thats also bad. Black oil also is a sign of a neglectful owner :(

Generally, if the car is well taken care if it will do fine for you. Beware of cars with ripped up interiors or bad paint, usualy people who let this happen are also people who dont change the oil.

Hi, i live in olympia too, near hawks prarie, you mightve seen my blue 86 N/A with the big 18's on it, two big mufflers on it, which rx are yo looking at in town? i'm always curious to drive others to gauge them against mine, i think mine is a little weak, and i'm trng to get lost power back. anyway, good luck with the buy.

JonEQuest 10-11-02 10:27 PM

I got one now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the help I went ahead and got the car today and drove it for an hour, it runs pretty good and does`nt get hot, the AC even works, the main problems are it needs a slave cyl. for the clutch and the top is cut due to theft attempt. It even came with neoprene seat covers and FD wheels, (hey i`m learning the lingo already).

Not bad for $1000 cash, I actually gave the guy about $200 worth of electronic stuff too, so $1200 really. I thought he would never go for my offer.....THANK GOD HE DID!!!!:D
