How can I tell if the tranny is from a Turbo II?

I'm buying a Turbo II tranny from a guy locally for my AE86/4g64 swap. Anywho, What can I look for to tell that it is in fact from a Turbo II?

Also, the guy said it was rebuilt but there was a seprate resivor for the 5th gear tranny fluid and it was not filled so there is no more 5th gear. Is this fixable or is the tranny completely toast and not worth messing with? I can buy it for $150

Thanks in advance for any info.

The n/a trannys have a large bell housing and small gearbox and the Tii one has a really small bell housing and large gearbox.

Aren't the turbo transmissions also ribbed for her pleasure?

hehehe... Thanks for the info so far.. Any input as far as the 5th gear issue? For that price I'd get it rebuilt as long as I don't have to tear down the whole thing again just for the 5th gear problem.

it shouldn't have an extra place for just the fifth gear, but it does have two fill and drain plugs.

So either of the plugs can be filled or do both need fluid? I'm assuming that you are saying they all go to the same place basically?

The guy doesn't know what he is talking about in reference to the 5th gear. I would then suspect the rest of his story. The TII trannys have a rib case for the center section, can't miss it. NA's are smooth case.

And I am now a member of the 1k club. Do I get a cookie? :rlaugh:

Yeah, but some people see the ribs on a M type (non turbo tranny) and think that they are R type (turbo) trannies. Non Turbo trannies are not free of ribs.

S4 Non turbo (M type) tranny:

S5 and non turbo verts tranny (M50 and M85 style tranny):

Turbo (R type) tranny:

The R type (Turbo) tranny has an access plate on it, two fill holes, and the bell housing is bolted on, while the M type (non turbo) has no access plate, one fill hole, and the bell housing looks like it is part of the tranny.

Thanks for the pics. I'm torn on wether to buy the tranny from this guy, it's only $150. What do you think? Would it be worth it to rebuild the thing for that price?

Honestly I'd look elsewhere for a used one. If 5th isn't working then there is something seriously wrong. For sale section, Indyparts.
