How can I remove the black tar on my floorboard?
 

Have any of you guys found a trick to remove the black tar on the interior floor board?
I'm trying to make my car light as possible.

Yes, get it as cold as possible (dry ice) and use a hammer and chisel.

and DO NOT use heat or any sort of thinners.. you will get a big sludgy black mess that ruins everything.. just ask me how I know... :)

Well I havn't done it in my Rx-7, YET, but in my AE86 corolla, slightly smaller, it took me two days to get all of it out.. this was without Dry ice, simply hitting it off with a hammer and chisel, but ice makes it alot easier, so I found on the last day of doing this :)

That is after the one day I spent trying to do it with heat and thinners... :mad:

IMO, I would rather use mineral spirits. It does make a mess, but with some old towels and a paint scraper, it only took 2 hours to clear out my cargo area. you might have to let the stuff soak for a while, but it does work.

did you find a motor? are you going to rebuild?
does your car have 4 lug or 5?
are you going to do the DE this month?
i would like to run a lapping day before the next race.

I have 3 motors and they all need to be rebuilt I'm going to let a local mechanic rebuild one, and I'm going to rebuild the other 2 when one of ours blows.
The car that I bought (1990 GTU) came with single piston brakes but I have another car ( 1986 GXL ) that has 4 piston brakes that I'm going swap with.
I won't be ready for the DE day, and I don't think I'll be ready for the next race either, dunno. I'm still looking for a good rotory mechanic to rebuild my engine. and I need to put in a roll cage.
What year model do you have?

call winston and get the guy in baton rouge to do the main hoop and maybe even the whole cage, he should still have the pattern from mine and winstons. the main hoop was $100. and i made all the rest myself. took about 3 weeks of evenings to get it done. try and go with a full cage. not just a main hoop with door bars. also cut the speaker towers out. i also recomend doing something like a nascar setup on the drivers side, i really like the extra room. plus it's easier to get in and out. later on you an get a removeable streering wheel, that helps also.
if winston doesn't have the guys # call me at home i should have it.
i might try to use some hawk blue pads at the next event and see how that works. i would like to get the 5 lug rotors but just hate the thought of all the work, plus i already have 2 sets of 14 rims. tires.

Get 15 lbs of dry ice (very cheap). Can usually find this at welding supply/industrial gases stores.

spread ice out over an area, wait for the popping and cracking to stop. Hit tar with a hammer, pieces will come right off.

repeat until completely stripped.

No mess, just a bit of cleanup before it's ready for paint.

What if there is no where that has dry ice around where you live? (I live in a small pissas hick town. :P ) Is there anything else you can use to make it really easy and fast aside from dry ice?

Anyone know how much the tar weighs? I may as well remove it on mine seeing as how my interior is out.

Dry ice can be found at most welding shops. Or you can make if yourself if you have large amounts of pressurized carbon dioxide...but not many people have this. :)
