How to brake system swap ABS to non ABS..
 

Ok I bought my car. It had ABS. Someone did a hack job with the hard lines so I don't have full brake like I should. Anyways there is a 89' non ABS at the local yard. I know I need to replace the hard lines with the correct lines form non/ABS. I assume will also need to replace the orig. brake booster/master cylinder on mine with the non/ABS version. Correct? Thats all I need right? What tools will I need to take with me to the yard?

unfortunatly i had to do something similar to this, due to a bad abs unit. i needed the non abs master cylinder, front left non abs brake line, and two brake line fittings: female to female adaptors of some sort.(which for me turned out to be two of the brake line distribution T's off of two other rx's, just because i had them. it may be possible to use just one, it does have two ins and two outs, but it has a piston of some sort in it, perhaps if you removed this, or modified it, it may work. ) i had to remove the abs unit and bend the lines to match up the front right and rear lines, and connected them using the distribution T's. make sure you trace them, to make sure you connect the right ones. the front left hard line comes off of the master cylinder into the wheel well, and is a direct fit, but kinda hard to manuever in. the fittings can be really tight to get off, so some penetrating oil, and patience, are a must. be careful not to strip the fittings, use a line wrench if you have one.

as far as tools, i think its a 10mm wrench for the brake line fittings (gonna need two for tightening, line wrenches help) and master cylinder. i think the abs unit is held in with 10mm bolts, four of them. not exactly sure on bolt size that one though. small flathead screwdriver for prying loose the plugs on the abs unit. a small tubing bender, or just pliers will work for bending the lines, just take it easy. silicone spray or something similar will help with the rubber grommets on the hard lines. stuff to remove the front left wheel, if you need too. thats really all i can think of at the moment. any small hand tool set should have you covered.

make sure to remove the abs computer, or you'll get a really annoying beep when you try to drive the car. its by the main ecu in the pass. floorboard. also, make sure to bleed the everloving crap out of the brake system. you'd be amazed how much air gets in the lines doing this.

Well whoever had the car before me removed all the ABS crap. Then t'd the rear lines to the front right brake line. So I don't have full brake force. It feels soft.

I don't know how much this will help but mazdatrix.com has a abs delete kit for $35 or so, it may help you out or try calling them they probably could give you more info. I am probably going to get their delete kit, my abs unit is leaking...they say it isn't very pretty though but it gets the job done.

Ok well I got a complete brake system from a 89' at the local yard. It was kind of a pain to get off since the car wasn't on wheels but we managed. My question is will I have to drop the rear suspension/subframe to get the hard brake line over the rear diff and axles. The car in the yard had the rear subframe dropped. I dunno how hard this will be with just jack stands. Anybody ever swap the lines out?
