how to adjust my TPS

my idle after my car is warmed up is jumpy, between 1000-2000 rpm for a while. also my a/c was on yesterday and the idle dropped to about 600 rpm [i no thats bad, idle should be 750 rpm] and so i turned it off then i had the unstable idle problem. any help is thankful

How To Adjust the TPS on GlobalVicinity.com
http://howto.globalvicinity.com/gv_w...i=58&co=1&vi=1

Disconnect the TPS and if your idle is still surging then you may have a vacuum leak. Check your BACV as well since you said the idle dropped to 600 when engauging the A/C. your BACV is supposed to up the idle a bit when you turn the A/C on.

This thread here should help you out with the BACV. Hailers helped me out quite a bit.

thanks guys for being there

Start out using the method in the online, free, FSM. It uses the two LED lights mentioned in the threads above.

And when you finish setting it, take a look at the output wire of the narrow range tps, with a meter. You'll find out that it is outputting approx one volt dc. Happens each and every time the TPS is set using the two LED light method.

Because THAT(one volt dc), is the voltage output from the TPS to the ECU that triggers the ECU to output a gnd signal to the TPS check connector (green with three sockets). That gnd signal is what turns on the LED light (kinda redundant. sorta like saying "where's it at"). Never mind.,

Actually I find the voltage can go above 1v with the led method.

If I turn the TPS screw counterclockwise til both lights go out, then turn clockwise til one light comes on, the voltage is 1.08vdc. If I keep going clockwise til BOTH lights come on, THEN turn counterclockwise til ONE light is on, the voltage is inevitably one volt dc. I have repeatability on either of my cars doing that.

That said, the FSM uses the word approx. And 1.08 or so is approx. Setting the TPS is over rated. If the output is approx one volt dc with the car fully hot, one should just walk away from it and leave it alone. Same if the two LEDS is used as instructed in the FSM. Just walk away once the one light is on and the engine is hot at that time. Too much time is wasted on the TPS imho.

I agree with the TPS adjustment being overrated. I saw one thread about the tach being off, someone suggested that it was due to the TPS being out of adjustment...:uhh:

Maybe its just my car, but if the TPS is set over 1.05v, the throttle gets a little touchy and feels weird. Setting it to .98-1v, the throttle feels just fine.

Have you experienced this at all in other vehicals?

13bSpoolin 09-30-07 01:12 PM

my car runs better with the tps unplugged, could it be adjusted wrong?

RotaMan99 09-30-07 01:40 PM

Yes it could either be out of adjustment, bad or the connector may be dirty. The link provided should tell you how to adjust the TPS. You can use the same method for checking the full sweep of the TPS to make sure there are no dead spots, as in a range where the voltage or resistance stays the same or areas or ranges where there is no voltage or resistance.

alright thanks, when i check the connector with an ohm meter it drains my battery on my meter, i just put a new battery in my car and its got low voltage now already after like a 2 weeks

Anubis06 10-05-07 10:31 PM

we should start a thread saying: "how to explain tps adjustment in as many different ways as possible"

Rotaryrockstar 10-05-07 10:54 PM

LOL! I know... If I had a nickel for every TPS thread I've seen set straight by HAILERS... Honestly Hailers... God bless you (or whoever) for having the patience to explain this over and over again. Someone should give you a trophy for being the savior of the electrical systems in all the running 2nd gens to date.

The ironic thing is... Is that Idle and TPS adjusment in the 2G RX-7 Turbo truly seems to be a matter of rocket science. I've been an RX driver/tuner for 6 years now. I've done some HARD things like, Auto tranny to Manual tranny transplants, upgraded turbos... And, I STILL can't seem to get my car to idle right... I've decided this season that this is my goal. To get to the bottom of the rx-7 idle conundrum. I personally can't imagine an S4 T2 with the vac rack removed, and some other minor performance mods idling perfectly with the STOCK ECU. I would love to see it, 'cause I know it's out there.

LOL, anyway... 3 Cheers to AaronCake, Hailers, NZConvertible, ICEmark,WayneNA/88,RETed and Dale Clark. Without you guys... I think this nation would be sadly devoid of 2G RX-7s. The most beautiful cars ever made!

im very close to batting my tps, cos i think i need a new one. its funky, really lol, aside from that i cannot for the life of me get my idle under 1k unless the a/c is on.

i dunno what im doing wrong but im doing something wrong lol, its so much easier in every car aside from the seven.. maybe its because how the throttle body is.. and how fucking stupid its packed up (n/a) idk, i spent the whole day tryin to figure out what im doing wrong, still cant get it to idle right i just walked away lol...

Roen 10-07-07 12:40 AM

ray, take it by us, we'll lower your idle and keep it stable.

yeah i appreciate all of your knowledge about 2nd gens as well. thanks guys.

The TPS is NOT used to set the idle speed. Period.
