Is this housing useable???
 
I'm very tempted to use these, would you? What does the everyone else think?

They are a little overported but it is going into a large ported bridge motor.


My concern is the scratches/chrome flaking. The chrome flaking is in spec and that is the worst area out of the pair of housings. I can barely catch my finger nail on it but I'm sure its more than .0002" or whatever the limit is on the spec.

you will probable loose compression or brake the apex seals since they are carbon made(they are fragile)

the gouges aren't visibly that deep and the area they are located is not a great detriment in the engine's ability to still make decent compression.

so, yes they should be usable assuming you knock down any high spots. i'd be more concerned about the edge wear since it looks like the chrome is gone, which probably tracks at least as far as the compression area, which would reduce the engine's ability to make compression more than the failed seal gouges. if there is much of a step from the leading plug up to the oil injection port then you should consider looking for something else.

Spec says to replace it if chipping extends inward more than 2mm (0.08 in). The Rotor Housing is re-useable even if the steel base under the chromium plating is exposed, if this has occurred no more than 2mm (0.08 in). This housing is at the threshold of 1.9 to 2mm that in that area.

The 'problem' is that there is no flaking that bad anywhere else on this housing or its matching rotor housing.

It starts right between those scratches and goes down to just below the opening of the exhaust port.

If you look at the opposite egde, that's about the wear all the way around the rest of it on both sides if not better.

Mazda usually has pretty conservative specs as well.

Really it's more the intake/compression area of the rotor housing that makes it or breaks it for me, if said area is in better shape than what is pictured I would indeed reuse those housings.
