Honing a rotor housing

Is it possible to hone a rotor housing?

Aaron Cake 12-18-03 09:48 AM

Nope. :)

Maybe if you wanted to make a modern art sculpture out of it.....

THe problem is that, unlike a piston engine car, they don't make rotors in bigger sizes like when you would Bore Out a Piston Block.

Also, if you look at the side of the housing, you will see a definate transition between the innersurface of the housing where the seals ride, to the base metal. If you would hone the housing, you would ruin that hardened surface and it would be worthless anyway....

Its my one major gripe about the rotary engine... Once the housings are nicked or scratched, they are done.. go spend a grand on two new ones.... Yeesh

Which is why I keep asking ... why can't they sleeve the rotor housings.

Isnt scallywag working or worked on a way of re-spraying the crome surface on a rotor housing?

That's a really good question...

Because no one wants to tie up the capitol (READ $$$$) to try and duplicate the machinery that mazda has the patents on for such a relatively small market.

Mr. Gadget 12-18-03 12:20 PM

why, when they can sell new at such a high margin

ERAUMAZDA 12-18-03 04:18 PM

Rebuilt housing for 325 or new at 400? THE VOLUME ISN"T THERE FOLKS!!!!!

Get it thru your pointy little heads, we are a very small speck in the automotive aftermarket. NO ONE is interested in tieing up the capitol to produce parts YOU WON'T BUY! The majority of FC owners are a bunch of kids who can't afford the basic maintenance to keep their car running properly anyway. ITS A COLD CRUEL WORLD OUT THERE!

Honing wouldn't work because it would ruin that stuff that the insede of the housings are coated with. some funky chemical name thats applied like chrome, electricution
