Holset turbo
 

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing. This guy wants me to buy it off him. It comes on a cummins turbo diesel, and he thinks that I could use it on the second gen. I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know. All I could find is that it pushes 75 pounds per minute at 75% efficiency.

Yes, they are quit common here in Sweden. The hx40 and the hx50 are two units from Holset and they are nice, buy one!

It doesn't have a wastegate on it.....I know that for a fact. The inlet is 4" and the outlet is 3".....the mounting is something like 19CM. I don't know....what do you think something like that is worth?

Have u actually seen it? What size truck did it come off of? Im by far no expert but it might be a bit over kill if its too big u won't be able to spool it to its ability.

Good turbos. Holset has a good webpage with compressor maps and such. IMO any of the turbos off the Dodge/Cummins trucks will be way too big. They've used several different trim levels through out the production run. The earliest turbos (old body style trucks) had the largest trim level and were not wastegated. All the later (newer body style trucks) were wastegated. Keep in mind that they're being used on 5.9L diesels with absolutely huge intercoolers. Diesels run at a much, much leaner mixture ratio than a gas motor and thus have a great appetite for air. In short these turbos move LOTS of air.

My 95 had an HX35X with a 14cm3 housing and I ran it at 32 psi all the time. Stock pressure ran at 18psi. That turbo is good to around 40psi before the heat gets out of control.

The HX40 is a big time hopup turbo for the go fast guys, There are many guys making 500hp+ at the wheels with the HX40. These things push some serious air and with the diesel you need big time fueling mods to spin them. I'm guessing the rotary won't do a good job of spooling it. BTW, 500rwhp might not sound like a huge number for 5.9L but keep in mind this is being made at around 3000rpm with peak torque numbers typically in excess of 1000lb/ft.

On my 2001 is a HX35Y. This is the smallest turbo used during the Dodge/Cummins run so far. Think it has a 12cm3 housing. It "looks" like it might have potential to be used in some type of other application. Doesn't look entirely huge anyway.

I run a HX52 with a 18cm housing, I think it flows around 90lbs. Its very similar to a gt42. I have a halfbridge motor and it spools right now 18.5psi at 4300 rpms. I have no dyno run yet but It fells fast to me. More power than I have ever had.

My buddie has an HX35 on his FC and it runs great. I have another fried who put an HX40 on his 2JZ Soarer and is expecting 450-500 hp with fairly low boost. From everything I have heard if you can get one cheap they are some of the strongest and best turbos you can buy. And remember that a little 13B moves a ton of air compared to most piston engines. For example a turbo that will would work well on a 3.0l tuned up 2JZ will spool at least as good on a 13B. I have seen a 13B with a 78mm borg warner turbo spool up below 3500 rpm and that turbo dwarfs even an HX40.
