High beam with lights down

I was wondering if anyone has try'd this, cause i did it on accendent. Try high beaming when your lights are down. . . i use it all the time now. . . wondering if anyone know's how 2 keep them on? i'd like 2 use them during dusk. . . instead of just turning my lights on

rxhaven7 03-03-04 10:01 AM

I will have to try that but i dont know about using it because one of my lenses underneath the headlight is out.

krazykoncepts 03-03-04 10:08 AM

when my headlights are down i need to hold the high beams on.....it wont stay on like it does when the lights are up

liKeiThil 03-03-04 11:02 AM

yeah. . . i was wondering how i could keep them on. . . i wanna see if it looks tight to . . .

lol, noobs. I like how my foglights tun off when I use the flash to pass light.....it goes light on on top/light off on bottom, looks pretty cool IMO.

Matt22 03-03-04 01:43 PM

you can do it like aaron cake OR
here is what i did, I wen tto the junk yard and found
a switch that looked factory and would fit in my center consol hole. I then cut my head light relay wire, spliced in 2 wires and ran them into the car and connected them to the switch. made it all look pretty, and i was done. when i turned on the headlights they will go up, and then put them down. flip the switch and they wont go up, they will be shinning through the ports (of course use high beams when using the ports) you get a bit more light if you take out the ftp lenses, they work gret in conjunction with fog/driving lights. another thing you can do is with the switch off(so headlights raise) turn them on and in the middle of that flick the switch you can get them to raise halfway up. I think it looks good that way, or raise them a quater of the way. you get the idea. lates Matt22

Sorry to burst your bubble, but nearly every car in the world can do that. ;)

Cars with pop-up headlights usually raise them for a few seconds when you flash them, but North American FC RX-7's used Flash-To-Pass lenses in the nose so they don't have to pop up. Japanese FC's have parking lights in place of the FTP lenses, so the headlights pop up when flashed.

Do not do that with the high-beams. It'll be just as annoying to oncoming drivers as when the lights are raised. If you're going to rig the lights to work while lowered, only use the low-beams. And make sure you raise them when it's dark, or your vision will be severely reduced.

As I said, don't do that unless you're an inconsiderate ass...

Are you trying to make your car look completely busted up?

well i had a pair of semi sealed houseing with
replacable bulbs in them, H4's to be exact, and i had
my flash-to-pass lenses out, so i would use the high
beams through the ports as my only lights. I did this for
2 reasons, first the high beams emit a beam that starts
from a higher point in the housing so it cleared and
went through the ports perfectly in my car, secondly the
low beams jsut didn't give enough light to make me
feel safe driving through the streets with jsut those on.

Now for some more info I was also using as i think they
were 100/110w blubs. so needless to say they were
hella bright, if you were to put you hand a foot away
from them during the day you could feel the heat. So I
was not being inconsiderate to others by using he
brights through the flash to pass ports i was being
considerate by doing that. Lates matt22

Easiest way I've found is just to tap a wire in at the headlight bulb on either low or high beam termianla whichever you want and just give that wire a 12v+ signal when you want em on, i have mine on with the ingniton like daytime running lights but a switch could be used sperately or in conjuction with igniton so you can turn them off with the car on but they will go off with your key too so you can't accidently leave em on

Yeah you were. The high-beam is focused higher at a higher angle than the low-beam, which increases the range of the lights. They are not actually brighter, just aimed differently. So the light coming out of you FTP lenses was still aimed directly at other drivers' eyes, which is both inconsiderate and dangerous. And because of the tiny size of the FTP lense, there's still not enough light to drive safely.

C'mon man, it's just common sense. You don't sacrifice lighting just for looks. If you don't like pop-up lights you should've bought another car.

rotoboy20 03-28-04 10:00 PM

chill NZ! have some cooth! just cause youre smarter than everyone else ( ) doesnt justify the way you communicate your opinions, or common sence facts for that matter. hell, i know if you had talked down to me like that, id have to punk your ass down! no drama though, so dont take offence.

personaly, i think thats a cool idea, although i would use the retracter switch(the one that flips them up and down with out turning on the lights) to operate them. and ofcourse i would flip them up at night.

lets all play nice!

****chill NZ! have some cooth! just cause youre smarter than everyone else ***

Yeah! He's right up there with the fellow who suggested the airpump supercharger (twin design). humor :D

And about *punk your ass down*, whatever that means.........You know that fellow Cris Matthews on HARDBALL on TV??? He looks like a chubby little guy, a real softball, but in real life he stands about six four and ain't the kind of guy that you could *punk his ass down* without bringing your lunch to do so.:p:

NZConvertible 03-29-04 12:06 AM

WTF is cooth?

Dumb ideas that don't affect anyone else are one thing, but dumb ideas that are unsafe to you and others around you are entirely different. If this caused an accident involving me I'd be doing a helluva lot more than talking down to him.

Are you trying to tell me that (a) the amount of light coming through the FTP lenses isn't substantially reduced compared to raised lights and (b) shining your high-beams at oncoming traffic is okay? I can't wait to hear your explanations...

scheistermeister 03-29-04 12:26 AM

well wouldnt the angle of the high beems be different in the down position anyway??? the lights dont just raise straight up. the angle they would be at in the down possition isnt the same as when they are flipped up...

Actually, they DO raise straight up. Have you ever popped your hood and seen them in the down position? They still point straight ahead. If you have someone flip it up while you watch it... it kinda swivels with respect to the lid. Try it some time.

NZConvertible 03-29-04 01:16 AM

That's how the FTP's work. The headlight still points forwards when down.

rotoboy20 03-30-04 08:34 AM

all i was trying to say is that there are other ways of calling people a dumbass then actually calling them a dumbass. by cooth i meant manners, maby i spelled it wrong, or it could be a dialect thing, with you being aussy and all. dunno. anywho, i didnt say his idea was tottaly good. i was thinkin bout using the low beam with the lights down. kinda like daytime running lights.

oh and about the punking of asses down, sorry bout that, wasnt really nessacary of me to say.

sure, i laugh at the noobs, but i was once one too.(although i was never so stupid as to design a supercharger with the air pumps) so i got kindof a soft spot for them. no point in being mean to them or tottaly dissing their ideas.

in my opinion, it doesnt take all that name calling to tell someone that they just had a terrible idea, reguardless of how dumb it is. personaly i wouldnt wanna look like an ass by flying off the handle at some silly noob.

sorry, off subject, continue the storm of smelly brain farts. (congering of bad ideas, what ever you wanna call it)

no hard feelings... eh NZ

rotard 03-30-04 11:14 AM

I believe the 'cooth' thing may relate to 'uncouth', as in unmannered. Just being semantic, and exploring the fascinating diveristy of the English language between various geographical areas.

Side note -- I was in NZ about 15 years ago, and it seemed like everyone got pissy (flashing, etc.) about us keeping our (low beam) lights on during the day. I was curious if cars over there now have full-time lighting?

P.S. Couth is apparently a word, though I've never heard it before. Thanks, rotoboy, for contributing to my vocabulary!

truespin88 03-30-04 11:30 AM

The word is couthe. It means manners, etiquette.

Anyway, the centerline of the headlight (the bulb, if you will) should be hidden when the headlights are down. This will drastically reduce the brightness/depth of the lights. Try it. At night, pull your Retractor fuse and flip your headlights on. Look at them from in front of the car. Then hit the high beams and compare. Then raise the lights entirely and notice the difference.

relkceb 03-30-04 01:43 PM

All is true you dont get the same amount of light with the lights down because the flash to pass lenses dont focus the light like the insides of a headlight do. Try it at night it is not that bright.

For those of you that want to do this do what I do at driving schools when it is rainy and I have to have the lights on but the pop ups get in the way. Turn on your lights and put on your high beams on then go outside to the front of your car underneath and remove the rubber covers on each light motor then manually crank them down. To get them back to normal just turn the lights off then back on again This avoids f..in with your harness.

I never called him a dumbass. I said his idea was dumb.

Why on earth would you think I'm an Aussie! Don’t they teach geography in schools anymore? :(

That's fine, there's nothing wrong with that at all. What's dumb is thinking that it's safe to drive around like that at night, and thinking that switching to high-beams will not affect other motorists.

I don't think they were pissy with you, more likely it was a friendly reminder that you'd "mistakenly" turned your headlights on. Back then people here didn't seem to understand the concept of making yourself visible on the roads. It's better now though. Using foglights when visibility is less than perfect is becoming more popular, but it's not mandatory.

pardon me, my geograpy is a bit on the rusty side. i related your place of origin with austrailia simply because its in that area. are we cool?
