hesitation when i step on gas (searched)

I have an 87 Tii. Last time I drove it it ran fine. I parked it (only a couple of days) cause i have started sanding it to get painted. After I was done sanding it for the day I decided to take it for a drive. Well when I backed out of the driveway pushed in the clutch it stalled. I thought nothing of it and started it back up. Immediately I noticed it would hessitate till it reached about 1100-1300 rpm's. So i turned around went home and checked everything to make sure I didnt unplug anything and forgot to plug it back it. I cannot figure out why it is hesitating.
I did just put a Walbro in it about a week ago but it ran fine the few times i drove it. The plugs are newer with about 200-400 miles on them. Before I decided to take it for a drive i did somehow flood it. could that have possible fouled a plug or plugs. I already checked my TPS and it was off a little but i adjusted it into spec but it didnt help at all. Here is a list of mods I have;

1. Intake w/cone filter
2.ported W/G
3.FMIC w/Greddy BOV
4.Apexi GT-Spec exhaust
5.Apexi GT-spec DP
6. Walbro pump
7.Battery relocation

I did search but everything (or most everything) i found said TPS which mine was fine. It does flood rather easy now. Could the injectors be messing up. I do plan on pulling them out and having them cleaned soon but, the car was running just fine prior to flooding. Thanks again for all the help

here is a video of the hesitation. That just reving. it does the same while driving. Also the other day a plug that i have in my incooler pipe came out, I thought i ran out of gas so i used some gas in a can from my garage which was 87 octane. Would that have cause my issue? I havent refueled since then. Thanks again

Pull the TPS plug off and try again. MIGHT be a bad spot in the TPS. Just a guess. Car will start and run without the TPS. Then again it could be a lot of things.

florotory 04-25-10 05:01 PM

i will do that now before it rains. Thanks

florotory 04-25-10 05:26 PM

ok i pulled tps and it ran horrible without it but still did the same thing.

florotory 04-26-10 07:27 AM

ok I pulled the one of the plugs this morning and here is what i found. it smells like gas really bad. Does the plug look fouled or is this normal looking/ The plugs are pretty much brand new.

ok so i cleaned up my plugs, put them back in and same thing. Everytime i rev the car up it blows out smoke and smells like gas really bad. So the only think I can think of is that maybe the injectors need to be cleaned. They have never been out and cleaned. Or maybe the walbro is the issue. and it still hesitates for a second before reving like normal.HMmmmmmm Im lost

florotory 04-26-10 07:31 PM

well i decided to send my injectors out to be cleaned. I figured it would give me a chance to replace all the vaccum hoses and coolant lines under the manifold plus eliminate the possibility of the injectors causeing problems with the hesitation

check your fuel pump sock as well, rust in the gas tank is common.

RTRx7 04-26-10 09:12 PM

If that plug is brand new, you have a definite problem.

Have you changed the fuel filter?

ya the plugs are brand new. They have maybe 200-500 miles on them. They had a strong odor of gas. Im hoping that the injectors were leaking. The only thing ive done in the last few weeks to it is the walbro and BOV. Any ideas what the problem woulda been from looking at that plug/ Thanks

florotory 05-08-10 05:56 PM

ok i got the injectors back, put them in and still doing it. Only thing that i notice now is that it will be at full boost (7psi ish) and not accelerating very fast. Heres what I have checked so far:
1. TPS set it to within spec
2. vaccum leaks (which I do still have one but i gota wait till my gasket gets here for my acv)
3.new fuel pump
4.had injectors cleaned
5. Plugs are newish maybe 500-700 miles on them. but i did flood it and that when I started having problems

Anything I may have missed?
I am gona order a new fuel filter this week. And probably new plugs just in case.
I also need to adjust the throttle cable a little. I had to take it off when I removed the UIM.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I am extremely frustrated with this thing. OH how i love rotories

Until you have fixed the vacuum leaks, there's not much else to do.

ya i was just checking to see if there was anything else to add to the list of things to check. Im gona do a compression check this week as well. Im pretty positive its good but at least it will be one more thing eliminated. I just want to get this thing running properly so I can turn the boost up a little and actually drive it. Ive only put about 800 miles on it in 6 months

lastphaseofthis 05-08-10 09:12 PM

just to eliminate the fuel system, i would probably run a fuel pressure test while running and max pump pressure.

SpikeDerailed 05-09-10 08:28 PM

I would agree a fuel pressure test should be in order. What volume pump(walbro) did you put in there?

255lph. Im gona do a pressure test along with compression pn wednesday

florotory 05-13-10 08:44 PM

Ok well I replace the fuel filter, and cured the vaccum leak. It is still doing the same thing. Could it flooding have cause one of the plugs to foul out? They pretty new plugs. Thanks again. Any other ideas of what it may be please let me know. Id really like to get this thing running so I can actually enjoy it

RTRx7 05-13-10 09:43 PM

Where did you send your injectors?

florotory 05-14-10 07:21 AM

I sent them to witchhunter.com, This started prior to sending them out. A week prior I put a walbro in. I figured maybe it picked up a bit of dirt and clogged the fuel filter so that why I bought a new one, so far I have checked:

TPS x10000000
fuel filter
vaccum leaks
had injectors cleaned
Checked all grounds in engine bay and added and extra ground

I have spent hours trying to figure it out. Any other things that Im missing? I thought that maybe my BOV was leakng cause i had it set on a softer setting so I tightened it and did not help. Plus the car is idleing at about 1200RPM's (that maybe cause my throttl cable isnt adjusted correctly. I may disconnect the throttle cable just to verify that.

RXnos1200 05-14-10 07:39 AM

are you running an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator for your walboro fuel pump? check the fuel pressure.........

no im not. I will try to check the fuel pressure tonight

RTRx7 05-14-10 08:17 AM

You need to check and see if your coils are in spec and double check the timing.

If that's not it, I would replace the ecu.
