HELP! Weird noise from under car...

I have a weird noise coming from under the car. I can't pinpoint where it's coming from. Sounds like a squealing, like metal on metal. Not real loud but noticeable. It doesn't get any louder with engine speed. I can press the clutch at around 25 mph to let the car coast and the sound is the same. It seems to stay the same at any speed until I start to come to a complete stop. The noise stays the same when I make left and right turns. I dunno if this is a wheel bearing or what. Someone give me some advice on what, where to look at.

Sounds like breaks, they have a tendency to do the whole ventrillquist thing. If you press your break pedal (not stopping) does it stop or change?

If I press the brake pedal soft or hard there is no change in noise. It's still there. I don't think it's brakes.

Throw out bearing?

Can you explain this one? There isn't any noise when it sits still in neutral. No noise when I shift into 1st or any other gear. Only when the car is moving.

If you have a manual tranny and the throw out bearing is bad you will hear a squeal when you shift gears. Sometimes when it's in neutral you will hear it as well. Jack the car up, start it and listen. I bet the throw out bearing is bad. How old is the clutch?

DASUPACAT1 05-08-06 08:43 PM

Clutch is only about 6mo. old Doesn't make a peep when the car is in neutral sitting still. When the car is still at idle and I go through the gears with the clutch in it doesn't make any noise. When I get out of 1st nothing. Only when the car is rolling, in or out of gear.

Hmm, could be wheel bearing. I found that I had one rear bearing bad after 133K miles. Couldn't hear it will driving only when coasting. If you have a squeal and you know the clutch and throw out bearing is good then you can isolate it to a wheel bearing. Jack up the car and spin one wheel at a time to pinpoint the problem.

I thought throw out bearing made more of a whining noise. Or maybe that's the pilot bearing. Could it be a universal issue?

I dunno. I drove it this morning. didn't here anything. However when I press the clutch in when the car is at a stop i can here a faint humm.

if its not the wheel bearings, and you have'nt done them, the car more than likely needs them anyways.

The ONLY FC I've seen with mint (noiseless) wheel bearing is mine.........after I changed them

But seriously, I would put on all 4 (unless they've been recently changed) and then drive the car and see if the noise is there....if it still is, then you'll be able to hear it more clearly since the howling wheelbearings you've become used to are now as quiet as mice
