Help: Speedometer Stopped Working
 

my 88 turbo's speedometer just stopped working and theres a cable hanging from under my car what happend anyone|????

well it may have come unhooked from the transmission. I would recommend jacking up the car and checking to make sure the cable still has the end on it and then reinstall it to the transmission if it does.

im sure it's already too late, the cable can slide out easily and is probably on the roadside somewhere.

jack the car up as mentioned and see if the cable is still in the housing and whether the threaded cap is still usable, the cable just threads onto a housing on the side of the transmission (driver's side tailshaft housing), align the squaure or "T" notch up with the pins in the gear and thread it back on nice and snug, you may need to remove the instrument cluster to realign the cable with the cluster however if it still doesn't work afterwards.

Sounds like what happened to me. I was driving home from a driving school and as I was going over an expansion joint for a small bridge over a creek the speedometer suddenly went to zero. I heard an occasional light banging wound from under the car. When I got home I investigated, the spedometer cable had come off the tranny, but was still attached to the car. Unfortunately it was unusable. The tab that inserts into the transmission was broken off, and the nut part of it was banged to hell. Just replace the cable and you'll be fine, but you should tuck the cable up out of the way in the mean time to stop it from draging and banging on the car.

I was pushing my car pretty hard on a twisty road once and it came out. At first I thought it was the connection behind the dash but after about a half hour of driving still, I checked under it and the cable had come out. It's really simple to see where it comes from and how it gets back on when you are under there. It just threads back in like Karack said and it worked fine since then.

If the cable has come out of the housing as mine did then you will certainly need to replace it. It took me about 45 minutes to replace it, but I didn't take the dash cluster off, it was too big of a hassle so I spent a lot of time plugging it in from under the dash. It was a bitch but its got to be done.

yea that thing is so hard to plug into the cluster I didnt even have it plugged in for a good month or so because it irritated me so much trying to plug it in

takes me 5 mins to remove the cluster and plug it in and reinstall the cluster, *shrug*

I guess you have quick and small hands then... took me 15 minutes just to get the thing plugged in to the cluster - big hands get in the way...
