help! really bad gas milage?
 

i had my tank at half way and drove 40 miles...now its at a quarter tank! is this bad?...any idea?

That's awful. Replace your O2 sensor, make sure your air filter isn't clogged, get new plugs and wires. Replace your fuel filter, change your oil. you should be getting somewhere around ~20 miles highway, and like ~15 city.

To conserve fuel keep it under ~3500-4000 RPM and keep your throttle steady.

Do a tune up, basically.

And check for fuel leaking under the car or black smoke out the tail pipe (indicating a rich air/fuel mixture). Drive safe, smooth, and fuel efficiently normally, and race when your on the race track. Or do what you want but the consequences are obvious (atleast to me, well then again they didn't used to be?!). Peace, Zach

what are your mods because usually if you have aftermarket exhaust and intake and others then you coule be running too rich....does your exhaust smell bad??? does the tip look wet ...if so then get a fuel pressure regulator and turn it down a bit

an personally i say to keep in mind if your running around 120mph expect that kind of fuel mileage i allready learned that the hard way;)

^that is the truth, and even if you can afford the gas can you afford to fix the non-repairable pollution damage, hell no, than again a lot of people don't care I wonder why they feel that way?

Refill your tank to see if it really ate up that much gas. Mine likes to be a prankster and say that I am on empty or close to it after a little drive, so then I fill it up and only put in a gallon or so...guess my sensor is going bad or what not.

i dont rev abouve 3k due to an unaligned pressure plate that makes the car rattle (not a big deal, so i'll change it when the clutch goes bad)...as far as mods, the car is my dd so its 100% stock....no smoke whatsoever, but it has a really rich gas smell....i'll look into doing the tune-up sport skater mentioned...thanks guys

there is also a mixture screw on the top of the throttle body, but I think it only controls the idle mixture, but it may need adjustment or something. check for a fuel leak, that sounds even more likely if you can smell the fuel.

The stock gauges isn't very acurate at times. The only way to measure gas milage is to fill it up, drive, then divide the miles driven by the gallons it takes to fill up.

I wouldn't mess with that screw.

Before you do anything check your timing. My timing was way off and it screwed my gas mileage over BAD.

Please check your gas mileage the right way and not just by the stock gauge.

1. Fill up the car until the pump stops automatically
2. Write down the mileage
3. Drive
4. Fill up the car until the pump stops automatically
5. Write down the mileage
6. (New Mileage - Old Mileage) / (Miles Driven) = MPG
7. Post again with what you get

It's best to do it a few times. I get varying results (I do this EVERY tmie I fill up). I get anywhere from ~14 to ~23 mpg depending on how, where, and conditions of my driving.

thanks guys, the screw on the throttle controls air flow...and also, my idle sometimes is not constant, it wiggles up and down...? could this be a symptom of something?
