ok, i have a newer/running 13b out of a '91 that runs and a 86 FC that would like to be its home. i have stripped most of the extras from the engine for ease and unbolted the tranny bolts and the motor mounts. i would like to leave the tranny and drive train alone and just pull the engine itself. Though i seem to keep running into snags when i try to pull it out. I heard that i may need to remove the drive shaft first, then slide the tranny out of the back of the engine before i can pull the engine. Is that true or is there an easier solution?

when i did it, me and my friends unbolted everything and unplugged all wires. after that we just used a cherry picker lifted the engine a little and than wiggled it out from the shaft. i dont know it its a good thing or not. maybe have a jack under to support the tranny to pulling the engine is easier?? hope it helps

yea put a jack under the trans to hold it up and you are going to have to wiggle is some but it will come out

No need to mess with the drifeshaft. As said, support the tranny bellhousing under the clutch area (there's a rubber grommet in that area). Make sure nothing is holding back the engine (cables/wires/etc.).

Did you remove the intake and everything at the top of the engine to unplug the engine from the harness, or did you disconnect the harness at the computer in th pass. footwell?

Oh, make sure you have the rad off for a bit more room, and the hood too. I'm not going to assume anything.

i removed just about everything that would unbold under the hood and removed it for room and easse prior to this. radiator, hood, and even so far as to pull the fenders to reduce anything damaging them. i will have to use a second jack because i dont have a cherry picker handy, no biggy thought - i will just use a stationary one for the tranny. thanks guys - and i was half ready to rip the whole drivetrain apart.

be prepared to buy some new engine mounts. when i pulled my engine out 1 side of my mounts ripped

What??!

Anyone that is used to pulling out FR engines know that you remove the tranny WITH engine all at once to make it easier.

Trust me, pull everything out, if you dont, you'll have to wiggle everything to get it out and get it in.

To each his own. If the tranny is fine, I'd rather pull the engine out by itself. All you have to do to put it back in is tilt a little and maybe spin it a few degrees to help the input shaft find its way. I hate dealing with removing half of the exhaust and other crap needed to remove the tranny also.

When I rebuilt mine I just pulled the engine, only took me about 5 minutes to reinstall it as well. Like was said already, just put a jack under the little rubber gromet on the trans. This time around though I happen to be pulling both as we speak, just because I'm thinking of tearing the trans apart eventually.

It's not that hard to pull the engine and put it back in without pulling the tranny. Just make sure you have a clutch alignment tool handy if you remove the said clutch. Otherwise your're setting yourself for a mega PITA.

And an engine from a S5 (89-92) will NOT simply drop in a S4 (86-88). Some additional work will be needed.

Use the S5 Keg,and make it run like an s4 using the Manifolds,front cover,etc...You may want to look into that..If you are asking about How to pull an engine,I would Get someone with some Experience(no offence man..) to help you with the conversion.All My Engine pulls,I end up Cursing,because it gets Hung up on the Trans.So I Pull the transmission with the Engine.It is Easier for ME anyhow.And I find it Handy,if you have to get at Bolts you can Hardly get to With the Engine connected and In the car.it is Great also If you are thinking on doing the Clutch..the big bonus is you can Clean up the whole engine bay before you Drop the thing back in too!..anyways good luck to you..

+1 ive been swapping, pulling repairing, rebuilding engines for over 10 years now and I 100% agree.....
