Help!! Overheating
 

HELP!!I just bought a second gen(86) yesterday and on the drive home it overheated.Put more coolant in it,changed the thermostat and it was running fine then after 25 minutes with the hood down the idiot light goes off again.Also when the coolant light goes off the temp. is fine. I can't get ahold of the seller that I just handed a thousand dollars too. I was hoping to ask him what the problem was but....

If anyone can help I would be greatly appreciative

Hey sorry i wasnt around, from what i think your saying is its not over heating just the coolant level light comes on? if the temp is ok dont worry about it, its the sensor in the rad, mine turbo did that too, change that sensor and let me know, that car always ran fine, i never had any problems with it, but i never drove it 2 straight hours on the highway either, try that and let me know

how much are the sensor and where is it located.hard to change.damn,I would kill for a chilton manual right now

the coolant sensor is in the middle on top of the radiator...my TII add coolant light comes on every now and then.

Isn't there a main heater hose that likes to overheat and crack a lot?

i think its in the same spot on N/As and turbos but not sure, if not it will be near by

when it went off on the drive back coolant shot out everywhere but today it went off in the driveway and nothing sprayed....ofcourse i turned it off as soon as the beep came on

i dont know about it spraying out, have to see where it came from, and for the sensor, when i changed mine i had to keep adding coolant all the time til all the air was out, when you change that, fill it up let it run, let it cool down and check and do that hot an cold a few times and just keep topping it off, their used to be a post on here to get rid of that sensor problem and the buzzer too but its really better to have just in case, dont panic when that buzzer goes, sometimes if the cars sitting weird or your turning one way it could not have contact and go off, but check that out, im sure its something stupid goin on

Where is your coolant spraying from?? Also you may just have a big air pocket, i have dealt with this on numerous occasions, i just went to a local gas station and they use this yellow funnel that has an adapter that connects to the neck on the waterpump where you put coolant and they run the car like that and it gets all of the air bubbles out. It's not very messy either, any gas station that works on cars should have it, i'd also look into getting your coolant system pressure tested if you are truley overheating and shooting out coolant..

Doesn't your radiator have the air bleeder at the top? It's the plastic philips X thing on the passenger side of the radiator. Make sure the fluid is topped off before you start the procedure. Just keep filler cap off and this bleeder open while running engine until the thermostat opens for a while and the air pocket burps out then refill slowly to top off w/ engine running then replace the air bleeder cap. Happened to me before after a radiator flush and fill by so-called pros. Almost cost me an engine. Just be careful with the hot radiator fluid shooting out off the hole when it does burp. This should solve it, thats if what you have is an air pocket.
Oh, and make sure you turn your heater on high too when you do this. Otherwise it might introduce air into the system afterwards.
