HELP! NO SPARK!! and dead tachometer.

I was driving down the road, then it just died. I heard a little pop. I dont know if it was the engine burning of the rest of the fuel or some electrical short.

ANyways. I Have no spark to any of my spark pulgs. And my tachometer is dead. probably due to my coils getting no power.

ANy suggestions on where to start the elimination proccess. HElp me out guys.

Where due trailing and leading coils get their power from.

check your fuses

junito1 06-24-08 12:40 AM

all the engine fuses on the strut tower are good.
I took a quick look at the ones inside the cabin, looked ok. Iwill pull them out tom. one by one and make sure.

Is there any particular fuse im looking for?

i think your trailing ignitors arent getting power.

take off the connectors and spray the with battery cleaner. Along with the other connectors attached to the igniotors that go to the ground on the shock tower.

Mine had no spark, i sprayed the connectors with battery cleaner, then it arced like crazy!!

oh and a mult meter would be helpful, hook up the positive lead to the battery and use the neg to test each connector tip for power

Engine fuse in the interior is a possibility. IF the fuses in the engine bay are all good.

Ok the tac runs off the PM gen so if all your fuse are good my guess would be your PM gen aka(Crank angle sensor) because with out that working u get no spark and no tach. Ok check the resistance from G1 to G2 and N1 to N2 and it should be between 110-210ohms

New evidence!
One of the fuses on the strut tower was bad. I dont have the cover to tell you which one it is. But it is the Pinkish color 30A, closest to the engine.

I changed the fuse. Tried to crank the car.. and the fuse popped again.
SO I have a pretyt bad short somewhere.

DO the Electrical gurus have any ideas where to start now?

check the engine harness.See if there is any wire that has rubbed on the Engine, causing it to Short out.You POPPED the EGI Fuse,Right?..then that Fuse also is Incorporated into all the Sensor Wiring. The Main places to check are around the Alternator,in back of the alternator,etc..the wires get Brittle there...Any Short in that harness will cause the EGI to Pop...oh also check the Injector wiring.

well uhhh 06-24-08 01:47 PM

the closest to the engine is the EGI COMP, the one "below" it is the EGI INJ. I kept popping the comp fuse, and i noticed it was REALLY hot. Turns out the connector for the air control supply solenoid (back of tb by booster vac nipple) had been disconnected during emissions removal and left loose. It then decided to touch the exhaust, effectively melting the plastic and shorting out. I would check all sensor wires.

EDIT: oh and the tach runs off the trailing coil, so no coil, no tach. I suspect once you get the short figured out, the tach will come back.

well uhhh, thank you=P

You seem to have the answer. Im gonna go dive in my engine bay see if anything is making contact. Because i did notice my fuse being hot also.

Would the downpipe be considered a grouding point? there were some loose wires that were ahnging on it a little.

junito1 06-24-08 03:42 PM

I pulled that wire of the down pipe and re-wrapped a few things. Tried the second fuse hoping it wouldnt go out right as i try to crank it like the previous one. And it cranked and stayed running. I havent driven her yet. But she sounds normal.

Thanks a lot again fellas!! You guys in here rock when it comes to electrical help.

glad i could help... this just happened to me the other day. Luckily i was like two blocks from my house and my skateboard was in the car.
