Help a newb with oil leak problem
First off I would like to thank everyone here for all the help they have given me without knowing it. Any one who says they can't find anything by searching is wrong.
Anyways, i bought a 91 na back in November. The car is in ruff shape, but nothing a little attention and TLC can't fix. When I bought it, the next day i noticed it was leaking oil on the drivers side, but it was so filthy I had problems tracing it. Two bottles of degreaser later, I traced it to two possible places, the oil filter pedestal and the oil pressure sending unit. Thanks to the countless posts about these same problems, I found the easiest solution to both. I replaced the oil pressure sending unit and added a little teflon tape to nip that leak in the bud, and replaced the o-rings in the pedestal, but they didn't look the same as the ones I pulled out. After waiting forever, the Mazda dealership finally got the oem ones in today. I replaced the rings, and the leak stopped, for about five minutes. Now it is leaking again. Any help to solving this would be appreciated. The leak seems to be coming from the side of the pedestal near the engine, away from the bolts. Thanks again in advance, Jerry |
use some RTV silicone sealant

I tried the rtv awhile back, just made it worse.

is the pedestal damaged? Or maybe the oil filter not on tight enough... sorry I am a little confused as to the location of the leak so I am just trying to cover the bases. Maybe try replacing the pedestal if nothing else seems to work.

There is no damage that I could see. I actuallt have tried three different oil filters (two different brands) thinking that maybe the one that was on there was the wrong one, or that I might have over tightened it. When I ordered the o-rings, I tried to get a price for a new pedestal through Mazda, but I was told they don't replace them unless there is visually something wrong, so they didn''t have anything in the computer on them. He is supposed to be making some calls this week for me to other dealers to try and get a price, but won't hear anything back for a few days.
At first the leak didn't bother me too much, its only about a quart every week-week and a half, but its just plain annoying at this point. |
