Help me make a good drift wishlist!
alright, heres the car/story I've got a 1990 GXL.
This will be a daily driven car, but will also be going to drift events, and prolly drifted 3-6 times a week at night time. And perhaps the ocasional freeway race :) Im lookin to have about 8grand to spend on this car. The things i have already planned are as followed: 1. 13bt and full RHD swap. 2. Full rebuild and streetport 3. I wanna be able to push max 25psi i had a bigger list in mind...but suddenly nothing comes to mind but that :bigthumb: A decent amount of the work I can do myself. motor swap shouldnt be a problem. but once it comes down to the technical stuff, rebuilds stuff like that. its all way outa my leauge. So tell me What would you do in what order? do you think 8 grand is a reasonable amount to attain up to 25psi? Give me your opinions. I know you guys know your shit. and its always fun dreaming about what could be. tell me what you'd do! :bigthumb: |
Sell the FC.
Get an S13 + SR20 with the money. -Ted |
Dont get me wrong. I dont hate 240's, have a good amount of exp with sr20, rb20s, and rb26's But niether S13, or S14 are my style. Im sticking with rotary.
I already have a friend of mine AST certified and everything. When he does my swap, it will be his 2nd rx7 RHD swap, and hes alrady done seven 240 swaps (sr20s, and RB series) My mind is set, it WILL be RHD, and it WILL be a RX7. But your right that a silvia would be much cheaper, and prolly easier. |
well for starters, RHD is both waste of time and a pain in the ass. Dont even bother with that. more than likely youll give up half way through.
|
I don't understand the idea behind 'want to push 25psi max', you could have the smallest turbo in the world pushing 25psi and making only 300whp, or a large one making 700. You should probably change that to an actual power goal, and not just some number that doesn't mean much of anything. Also, a RHD conversion ranks up there with the biggest waste of money possible on a rotary second only to a crapden supercharger. It's inane what people will pay to be unique!

MY WISH LIST AS OF NOW
First off replace anything that is broken or worn out. -Polyuerthane bushing kit - 86-92 RX7 Full Front & Rear Urethane Kit This complete set of urethane bushings includes the front and rear lower control arm sets, the front and rear sway bar to frame bushings, the front and rear sway bar end link bushings, (not used on 89-92) and the tie rod and ball joint dust boots. If you still have stock sway bars on the car, and want a more firm and controlled suspension, this is a great way to do it! $141.46 mazdatrix -Toe elminator bushings - Installation of "Toe Eliminator" bushings negates the rear steering and returns the car to the responses a sensitive driver is expecting during "Spirited" driving. (This type of driving will only be done by experienced race car drivers on non-public, closed course race circuits of course). $40 Mazdatrix - Secretelement $70 (Our DTSS Eliminators are made of solid steel instead of rubber, which keeps the toe unchanged during lateral load, giving the driver positive feedback and a more stable feel.) -Rear adjustable camber link - By pulling up or pushing down on the rear subframe where the original equipment vertical link is located, negative camber can be reduced or increased. This method changes both wheels an equal amount. $136 mazdatrix - Secretelement $115 ( The adjustments to the camber can be made quickly by the fact you make the adjustments while the link is installed on the vehicle.) -Steering angle kit - The Super Angle Spacers increase the steering angle by approximately 7 degrees. These are installed between the steering rack and inner tie rod. A thinner wrench will be need between the inner tie rod and spacer. Secretelement $70 -Strut bars - -coilovers -roll center blocks (front lower a-arms) -Sway bars or suspension / coilovers poly bushings rear steer eliminators tie end rods camberplates struts sways exhaust setup spare tire set |

100% steel units would weight like 100x more, costs almost twice as much, and basically do the same thing. I doubt you could feel the deflection of the delrin in the first place; delrin is what the Racing Beat units are made out of. -Steering angle kit - The Super Angle Spacers increase the steering angle by approximately 7 degrees. Secretelement $70 Geez, this is almost as bad as the URAS ones some seller was trying to sell for $80! If you want to save some money, just buy some metric washers and shim for 1/4" on each side. Keep in mind that with the wider steering angle, your stock wheels will end up touching stuff when close to full lock - you'll need wheels with less offset or run spacers. Good luck! -Ted |
I'm just now starting to understand drifting.
It's like racing to see how slow you can go, and how much rubber you can burn. I'd start with a spare set of wheels & some cheap hard tires. Then get permission to us some big office building's parking lot on Sunday for practice. |

1. 13bt and full RHD swap. Why the RHD swap? What could you possibly gain from this? Its only unique and somewhat cool on a showcar. You do realize that driving this on the streets will impair your visibility in certain situations right? Example: Making a left turn in a crowded intersection while there is a semi in the opposing direction that is trying to make a left turn. Its hard enough sometimes to peer around a semi in this situation in a LHD car, it will be impossible in a RHD(accident waiting to happen). Oh and if your insurance company finds out your car has been converted your rates will go up.

Ted, whats gotten into you? You don't normally help people that state right off the bat that they may be street racing. :) In this case it looks like he may even be night drifting on streets. I really hope not though. |
you want a drift wish list?
an endless supply of tires only because even after you have a car set right up for drifting, you'll burn two pair of 50% used tires in a couple hours easily |

I'm finishing up 16 hours of work soon. I'm TIRED. The A/C was out at work for the first 8 hours. I'm TIRED. People tell me I'm a royal asshole so I should be more helpful. I guess I totally overlooked the part about drifting on the street - DOH. I was more laughing at the 100% steel DTSS eliminators! :D Did I mentioned I'm tired? :D -Ted |
you got some big dreams there buddy. You can probably have a stock 13bt swap and rhd. not anything else on the list. Lets say you do buy a front clip.
What? 4 grand? Maybe 5? So you have 3000 dollars to play with, cutting weld, labor, drive train and t2 hood, replacing hoses, gaskets, misc crap. I'd say you're left about 1500$ Congrats, you'll have a stock RHD swapped 13BT RX7. 8 grand can get you an already built car and some money left over. |
RHD swap is such a waste of time. you'd be better off finding info about that on honda-tech.com
you have lsd, you dont really need much unless you want to turbo swap, wich will probly set you back around $3-4k. and full coilovers, $1k. there ya go. oh yeah, and eliminate that rear-steer crap with some solid bushing dealies.

-Ted thats what keeps these threads interesting! |
I don't mean to thread jack,
But what would be a good shift knob to run for night drifting 10-15 times a week? I was thinking a stage 3, but was told it might be to aggressive for the street and I need this car to get to school in and get really good gas mileage because I don't have a job. I hope to have around 20 grand to spend on this car someday. Thanks for the help, --Alex |
shyft mad tyte yo!!!

as far as the RHD swap is concerned...it can be done, and done well - talk to iceblue...
BUT IMHO, its the same as anythign else, if you want steak - don't buy chicken and put A-1 sauce on it......just buy steak. because in the end (even if its an RHD swap done as well as Iceblue's) its STILL a left hand drive car that has been modified. The vin will always show you that. But if you're real amibitious and have money to burn on sitting in the passenger seat to drive it instead of burning money on smoking tires, then be my guest |

My Drift Set-up
3 Attachment(s)
NA 13b!!!! Best way to go for daily driver. Daily driven turbos are a hassle already and beating on it causes more troubles. That's why I stick with my NA it's great!
Just save up for a good coilover set up that's what I'm doing....I have some KYB Gr2s and tein springs but they aren't gonna cut it. I want more. And improved steering angle would be nice to have as well. Here's some pics too but in the last one the car got a lil beat up....it's now back to normal again along with a New Mazda Reman motor with about 3-4k miles on it. |
