Help! Loss Of Power, Sputtering Noise - 88 Rx7 Gtu

Wasup everyone... I recently bought an 88 rx7 gtu 13b in pretty good shape.... then i got in a little touble (dont drink and drive) and havnt been able to drive the car for about a year... i started it though every so often and let it idol... not good for rotary to sit... but anyway before i quit driving it it began to make a sputtering noise, sounds like its right about underneath drivers seat, middle of car... maby exhaust leak???? could and exhaust leak contribute to loss of power?because i've noticed that as well. Also when i start it there is a noticable wishing sound up to about 3000 rpm, then fades away... it diddnt used to do this... if i hold it idled anywhere from 2000-2500, it will fade as well...., and sometimes when i dont hold it before accelerating, it makes the sound to 3000 then screaches---loud. maby a belt??? im gonna take it in soon, but have no money, just wondering if someone has any thoughts...

Do a compression test. The sputtering and loss of power sounds like an apex seal issue. Not driving it for a while, and just letting it idle may have built up some carbon deposits in the housings. Exhaust leak wouldn't cause a power loss on a rotary.
