help identifying an unattached hose

what is this hose, is it supposed to be unattached to anything like that? it's on my '87 N/A close to the fire wall on the passenger side.

also, when you spin the main fan what is it suppose to do? I did the test from eroncakes cooling trouble shooting guide. but when I spin the fan cold it gets maybe half a turn, then it does about the same after getting the car up to running temps. What should it do cold? (still trying to fix the overheating issue)

so far, I replaced the water pump, rad cap, took out and cleaned the rad (which seemed to flow well, but the out side was quite dirty), and now I ordered a fan clutch from apex auto.....(I think the fan clutch I have isn't acting right, hope this fixes the heat problem.)

Um...were you intending on posting a pic of this mystery hose?

that's odd...I uploaded it and it was in the attachments... weird...

BTW it's an auto trans if that makes a difference.

That hose is a drain/vent for the charcoal cannister and is exactly the way it should be.

It's normal for it to be there. Like said, for the charcoal canister.

thanks guys.

any help with how the fan should turn when cold?

pfsantos 07-29-09 07:19 AM

Fan should turn without too much resistance, then stiffen up as engine warms up and causes thermoclutch to grab.

clokker 07-29-09 07:22 AM

In theory, you should be able to feel a change in rotational resistance when the clutch is cold and when it's hot. In practice, I've not found this to be true, so either all my thermoclutches have been bad (my 240Z used the same type of clutch) or you have to possess inhumanly sensitive fingers to feel it.

I think it's a weak idea and have always swapped over to an efan.

well, the fan clutch I orded from apexauto should be here friday...if it doesn't work what are some good e-fans? (size/ brand etc...) I tried to search for the what e fan to get and most post ended up saying "this one.." with a link that doesn't work or goes to the main page on the site, and not the fan it self any more.

My take on it.
