help, i need my flywheel off by morning.
 

I'm in the process of putting in a new clutch. But need to resurface the flywheel. The only place in town can only be there untill noon, and i can not get it off, i need to stop the flywheel. Anybody know of anything that might stop it. I am worried to use my impact wrench, i am affaid it will hurt the engine somehow, or will it not. Please help me

You can use an impact. Also you can lock the flywheel in place with a large socket wedged between it and the edge of the rear iron.

Edit: Also, after you get the nut loose, leave it on just by a few threads so that the flywheel doesn't fly off while you whack it like it just called yo mama fat. Seriously, hit it really hard, preferrably with a rubber mallet. Last time I took my flywheel off I had more trouble getting the flywheel itself off instead of the nut.

Use an impact wrench, it comes off very easily, just pry on it easily so you dont mess it up while taking it off..

if it don't stop the flywheel will the impact wrench get the nut off.

I got that socket wedged in there now, so that will work.

a question about using my puller. i have one of those three arm ones. should i use the teeth on the flywheel or the clutch plate bolts for the anchor for the puller


also what do i need to torque it nut when i put it back on.

Dont use the puller on the Ring Gear, you'll tear it off, I just did that on mine, but I dont care since I have a ACT 9lb flywheel on there now. :) Use the 2 holes in the flywheel next to the E-Shaft nut to pull it.

just put the nut on so it sticks out past the threads just barely, pry with a prybar, and whack it with a BFH, it'll pop right off.

no need to fuck around with a puller

For claification, pry on one side with a prybar, and whack the opposite side with (heavy object). Be careful not to hit the flywheel surface. It should come off easily.

My personal method of getting the flywheel nut off is to take the engine out, haul it over to a local truck shop, and have them use their 1" drive impact guns on it. They usually have a sledge and prybar hanging out as well. Front pulley, flywheel nut, and flywheel, all done in 10 minutes or less.

Has anyone gotten a flywheel turned? I thought we had a stepped flywheel with no specs on how to turn it...

I had mine machined when I rebuilt the engine... no issues I was aware of, and it seems to be working fine 15k miles later.

Turn, grind, it's a recessed clutch surface. Any competant auto machine shop can do it.

Mine does not appear to be recessed...

Yeah, I have heard that machine shops can do it, but I have never really seen the specs.

If it's not recessed it is after market. Totally easy anywhere.

not true. TII flywheels are flat, not recessed.

So i tried to get a pry bar and hit it with a bfh!!! and it did not come off. So i am going to get a puller.

I tried my 3 jaw puller but i could not get it to work. Should i get the kind of puller were you screw the two bolts into the flywheel. or should i beable to use my 3 jaw puller

Pretty sure the flywheel is stepped.. I could be wrong though.

Hey, if I can get the flywheel off with a REGULAR hammer in three swings, a BFH should have no problem unless you weigh like 50 lbs. or need some serious weightlifting for muscle gain...

when i took the flywheel of mine it was a serial pain in the ass, its only easy if it has never been screwed with. Took three compressors worth of air to simply get the nut off, and mazda had kindly failed to machine the inside of one of the boltholes for my puller, which even then barely managed to get the damn thing off. ive had times when they were cake, and times where you start looking for really small welds or pins or something cuz that mofo aint movin

I had mine done. There was some initial confusion over what it was for (the machinest tried to tell me it was from a VW...I asked him to put down the crack pipe), but once we got that sorted out it was not a problem. I was charged a small extra fee for an "unusual" part.

Hmm... Yeah, I did some asking around, and most machine shops will do it.
