Help: High beam headlights stuck on
 

ok, so i'm driving down the road with my high beams on. another car comes up so i go to switch them off, and the bastards don't go off... WTF??? anyone have any idea what the problem is, i ended up taking the 30 amp fuse under the hood out cause they wouldn't turn off.

The Dim Relay might be bad.......or the switch. If you had a meter we could give instructions on how to tell one way or the other..maybe.

Check the Dim Relay like this jpg out of the fsm that is free and online at the same time. Also is attached a picture of the circuit from the same free online low cost FSM. That fsm will also show you where the Dim Relay is and the light switch cluster.

Personally I'm inclined towards the dimmer switch in the cluster switch. It seems to be in the latched position all the time for some reason???????

This will happen if the dash screws under the headlight switch (the two that go up into the surround from below) are loose or missing. When you pull on the lever to get back to low beams, the whole dash surround will flex and not allow it to fully extend. Mine are currently missing, so I hold the dash surround in place with my index finger & thumb while pulling on the high beam lever with my middle finger. Give that a shot before you whip out the meter.

In a series four, it's where it is shown in the attached jpg. To make sure its the right one, the wires connected to it should be of the colors: RW, RG, RG, RB and W.

What you MIGHT try is swapping it with one of the other relays and see if the problem goes away. I've NEVER done this on this car. I'm ASSUMING that one of the other relays is the same. You would have to look at the part numbers on them to see if any of the others is the same. If one is the same, then swap it. If none are the exact same number, then don't do that.

The CPU has nothing to do with the headlights at all.

I have an 89 GTU and recently had to trouble shoot my headlight problems, lost lights and they wouldn't raise when lights were turned on. I follow all the trouble shooting recommendations in the FSm and they were very helpful in determining my problem. See the following link for the 89-91 FSM section you need:

Do the trouble shooting as they describe and you'll find the faulty component. The easiest place to find a good relay, if your relay proves bad is the nearest junkyard. Just check the other Mazda models if they don't have an RX7. The trouble shooting procedures will if any of the relays are bad.

Yes, if you followed the FSM trouble shooting procedures and the headlight and dimmer relays passed then I'd say it is the dimmer switch that is the problem.

The dimmer switch opens and closes the high beam circuit for the headlight, obviously you're sending power thru the circuit since your hihgs stay on, so you have a closed circuit, the switch is not allowing that circuit to open. You need to take off the steering wheel, the FSM also has procedures to do this and then remove the instrument cowl by removing 5 mounting screws, 3 at the top and 2 at either corner of the bottom, again this is covered in the FSM. You can then disconnect the dimmer switch and try to figure out why it is not opening the circuit.

Do you hear and feel a solid click when you pull the switch? You could also have a wiring short that is completing the circuit ahead of the switch. This would be the most difficult cause to track down.

Check with Icemark to see if he has a replacement. Might also check to insure that the bottom of the insturment panel surround is tightly attached to the dash board.

You've probably got a bad dimmer switch, if you take it out of the dash you might be able to repair it.
