Help- Got fuel in my motor oil

I just bought a 88 T2 that wasn't running and decided to drained the oil to see if it was blown or not. When I drained it I smelled fuel from the oil really bad. I was wondering if anyone had this problem before? And if anyone knows what causes this to happen? Thanks in advance.

If the car has been flooded severely multilpe times, or allowed to sit flooded (it probably was) the excess fuel in the combustion chambers can contaminate the oil. Refill the oil, de-flood, and you'll probably have yourself a running TII.

So do I need to just put in new oil and it should fire up? Would this problem affect the engine to not run? And what can I do to avoid fuel flooding in my engine? Any help would be appreciated.

i think leaky injectors are the leading cause of flooding if it floods after sitting for a while.
take them out and have them tested. i don't know about the results of cleaning, might be better to buy new ones. but be careful which brand you buy. i've heard lots of good about RC, but lots of bad about Venom.

You can't tell by the smell. Most engines will have some gas in the oil over time. The rotary seems to be a bit more succeptible to that. Only way to tell if the amount is excessive is to have a sample of the oil tested by a lab such as Blackstone Labs.

Last time I had my oil tested it had 2% fuel contamination. However, since then I discovered the TPS was failing and causing an over rich mixture which probably caused most of the problem. But even with 2% fuel, the analysis was that it was not a problem.
