Help, cant reinstall speedometer cable
 

Guys, I need some help.

I'm trying to reinstall my speedometer cable to the instrument panel and the cable wont reach the male connector on the panel. No obstructions to the firewall...free and clear.

What's the trick here? So frustrated.

Can I disconnect the cable at the other end?

Please ....any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

Did you buy the correct one or is it the original?

Cable is the original. Pulled the dash out earlier and reassembling it. No new parts.

well obviouly you didn't cut it to be shorter right..

so you must have something wrong here. try unhooking it from the tranny and then re-screwing it in then carefully routing it into the back of the dash.
Even berret than that have you tried hooking it to the dash THEN screwing it on to the gear box?

I just did this and ket me tell you it barely reaches, there's nothing wrong.

I just went under my dash (it's impossible to do it by reaching behind the instument panel)
and grabbed it from under the dash felt my way to the end of it and pushed it in.

Make sure it is locked in, mine fell out once and I had to do it again.
When it's lock in gently pull on it to make sure it clicked in place.

Didn't cut it...

Previous owner installed new engine. I'm betting he didn't route the cable properly. Was tight dis-assembling it too.

Will look to see if there are any unusual kinks. Is there a diagram somewhere that would show what the route SHOULD be? Will check my Haynes and tech manual.

Here's the deal. Go inside the engine compartment. Find where the cable enters the crewcompartment. Shove the excess slack in the engine compartment INTO the crew compartment. That should yield another four to five inches inside the crewcompartment.

After you connect it to the speedo......tack the cluster on the dash with a screw or two and drive around the block. If the speedo reads.....go back and finish your installation.

Sometimes a little more slack can be obtained if....you get under the car. See where the cable leaves the transmission??? How it is held on the body rail with a clip??? TAke it out of that clip. That will allow even more cable to be shoved into the crew compartment. Done.

Hailers and all. Did it. I'm stoked. Used some great suggestions from everyone. I ended up loosening the threaded connector on the tranny and pushed the cable back through the firewall into the cabin compartment. Gave me 4 inches or so and was able to ensure a good lock into the instrument panel. Tugged on it to ensure a good connection. Reconnected at tranny ....just need to test drive it.
