Help with Alternator!!!
 

Doh!
Well I went to the autoparts store and got myself a new alternator. The lady behind the counter didnt seem TOO knowledgeable, but somehow I think I got her to get me what I needed. I made sure to ask her if it was for a turbo at the end, since she never asked me turbo or not. I ended up with an alternator that they ordered from a warehouse and had for me in 4 hours, so that was kinda nice. Well, I get it home and pop out the old one, and install the new one. One problem. That little black arm on the back that one of the wires hooks onto (I dunno what the hell its called), is angled differently than on my old alternator. On the old one it pointed toward the drivers fender, and the new one points almost straight up. And since I have an intercooler above the alt, the little black arm doesnt clear it anymore. So my guess is I ended up with a N/A alt somehow. Well, I know I can undo that little black arm, and rotate it, but there is like a peg on it that lines up with a groove on the alt, and if I wanted to rotate it, I would have to cut off that peg. Anyone know if doing so would cause any problems? Or anyone know any other solutions to this problem?

What I would do....
 

A) Return it to the store, making SURE that another could be had quickly.

B) go to a junkyard and get a older turbo alt.
Preferrable a dead one, and replace the arm.

C) remove the arm from your dead alternator, and move it over & return the old ALT. with the new arm as a core.


I prefer A or C.

A is bestm even if ultimately you have to wait a couple days.

You ARE sure that yours is dead right?

You have a manual to test it?

You can use the 88 service guide for the procedure.

You should be able to move it to the side position. Look at the pic and see the red arrow. This is where your terminal is right now. The green arrow shows the position for the side position. Your alternator should have both of these notches for either position.

ya its dead, i checked it at autozone and kragen. and the thing is, my alt doesnt have both of those notches, thats what the problem is. I would have moved it otherwise. but anyone know if removving that little peg with hurt it? I mean does it have to be aligned specifically to work?

I would not think that it would hurt it (removing the peg), however the only thing would be that once you modified the alt. it would void any warranty on it. This would be a bad thing. :(
I would probably do like sniperX said and bring it back for the other one that has the two notches. It looks like maybe this was an older alt that was rebuilt (pre-1986?)and in this case you would want a newer one anyways.:D
